Zendaya has explained why she feels "nervous" about her lead role in new movie Challengers.

The actor plays tennis prodigy turned coach Tashi Duncan in the sports-themed film by Luca Guadagnino, and stars alongside Josh O’Connor and Mike Faist in an intense love triangle plot.

While Zendaya stars in huge film franchises such as Dune and Spider-Man, her leading role in Challengers marks the biggest of her career so far.

As the film is released in cinemas today (April 26), in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the actor explained why she is nervous for audiences to see the movie.

"I always am nervous – I wish I was joking," she said. "From a personal perspective, this is my first time leading a film in this way, so I’ve felt that pressure, that fear, burden, or whatever from the beginning of just wanting to make something that I’m proud of and enjoy it, and sometimes that can be very difficult."

Challengers has received very positive reviews from critics ahead of its release and marks the highest Rotten Tomatoes rating for a feature film in Zendaya’s career.

In the same interview, the actor explained why she believes the film’s mix of genres and complex characters will be a hit with audiences.

She said: "These characters are incredibly complex and interesting. When people ask me what the movie is about, I can’t give them an answer in under an hour because it’s so complicated and these characters… It’s impossible to sum it up or define it, really, because it’s a comedy, but it’s not, it’s a drama’s but it’s not, it’s a sports movie, but it’s not.

"It’s undefinable in this really beautiful way. It’s something that people just have to experience for themselves and they will enjoy, I think, judging the characters and arguing about it after and changing their minds and coming up with theories and ideas."

Challengers is out in cinemas now.
