His first visit to Houghton was on a whim.

“I went up to their camp on a summer vacation,” Risdon said. “We were kind of in the area. My mom said, ‘Michigan Tech’s got their basketball camp up there the same week. Why don’t you go?’ So I ended up going and I really liked it.”

Michigan Tech plays in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, the same conference as Grand Valley, Ferris State and Davenport.

“I like that they are an engineering school, which is what I really want to do,” Risdon said.

“My mom’s a chemical engineer. I’ve seen some of the things she’s worked on and it’s something I want to do with my life.”
