Zane Trace senior excited to continue research at MIT

CHILLICOTHE — Zane Trace senior Wyatt Vick has loved performing research his entire life, now as he prepares to graduate and attend MIT, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, he is looking forward to taking part in more real research that can make a difference.

Growing up Vick has always been interested in science and research, something his parents strongly encouraged as they were researchers themselves. They would often take him to learning events where he could get hands-on learning that helped spark his interest.

"My parents taught me a lot," said Vick. "It got me really interested in research."

Once in school, Vick's love of science continued to grow when he entered the science fair in fifth grade with his best friend. The pair have worked together for the last eight years to create a variety of engineering-based and material science projects, all of which have made it to the state level, which he is very proud of.

When applying for colleges Vick said he was not fully prepared for the application process and what was needed since he was taking college classes during the time of Zane Trace's college prep class. This original confusion led to some worry in Vick but, ultimately, he was accepted into MIT where he hopes to become an engineer.

"It was a big relief getting in," said Vick.

He had previously toured the campus and got to see all the labs at the facility, something he said was a "cool" experience. As a freshman Vick is excited to be able to jump headfirst into research at the school as he hopes to make a difference.

"I am excited to, hopefully, do some real research," said Vick.

Vick is also a member of his school's FFA group where he participates in various skilled events. As an athlete, he runs in both cross country and track and swims. He has broken several school records with his skills in the three sports and made it into the top five overall record holders in school history for the 800-meter dash.

"It feels really good to be able to do that," said Vick of setting records at the school.

Outside of school, he has participated in 4-H for several years showing poultry such as turkey and chickens. He has also been a camp counselor for 4-H and a recent King's second attendant for the Ross County Fair.

Zane Trace High School seniors will be graduating on May 18.
