Zach Wilson era in New York is over, as Jets trade embattled QB to Broncos

The Zach Wilson era in New York is officially over.

The Jets traded Wilson to the Broncos for a late-round pick swap in the upcoming 2024 NFL Draft.

In the deal, the Jets received pick No. 203 in exchange for pick No. 256 in this week's upcoming draft in Detroit.

This was a move that most expected would be a matter of when, not if. It was clear when the team acquired future Hall-of-Fame QB Aaron Rodgers last offseason that Wilson's time as a starter for Gang Green had come to an end.

Miami Dolphins linebacker Bradley Chubb, top, and defensive tackle Christian Wilkins, bottom, hit New York Jets quarterback Zach Wilson (2) causing a fumble during the first half of an NFL game at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Dec. 17, 2023.

In 33 starts, the former No. 2 overall pick had more interceptions (25) than touchdowns (23) and had an underwhelming record of 12-21 in three seasons.

During his tenure with Gang Green, Wilson was sacked 113 times -- including a career-high 46 sacks (fourth most in 2023) -- despite playing in only 12 games last season.

With Rodgers ready to go for next season and the signing of veteran QB Tyrod Taylor in free agency, there was no chance the 24-year-old signal caller would be under center next season barring major injuries in front of him.

Instead, the Jets give Wilson a chance to likely compete for a starting job on a Broncos team that currently has QB Jarrett Stidham and Ben DiNucci on the roster.
