Zac Efron's new movie The Iron Claw has landed a strong Rotten Tomatoes rating from its first reviews.

The movie from director Sean Durkin, which also stars The Bear's Jeremy Allen White, follows the real-life story of the Von Erich wrestling family and their lives inside and outside the ring.

So far, the movie has attracted largely positive reviews, earning an impressive 90% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with particular praise going towards Efron's performance as Kevin Von Erich. However, not all critics were singing the movie's praises.

Here's what reviewers have been saying:

IndieWire

"However you choose to think of it, The Iron Claw deserves at least one title that simply cannot be contested: This is the heavyweight tear-jerker of the year."

Variety

"In the end it’s Zac Efron’s movie. He plays Kevin as a moving simpleton with hidden depths, a fellow of such decency that the one thing he won’t do is disobey. He’s the film’s Cringing Bull."

ScreenDaily

"Telling the true story of a decorated wrestling family dogged by relentless tragedy, The Iron Claw is a profoundly sobering tale wrapped in a mystery – are some people legitimately cursed?"

The AV Club

"Hobbling towards its melancholy ending, The Iron Claw reflects its subjects: It looks like a champion but can’t catch a break."

The Guardian

"Whereas Durkin’s other work is twisty, non-linear, shifting between time or viewpoint, The Iron Claw is relatively straightforward and, despite a roster of committed performances, frustratingly opaque."

The Hollywood Reporter

"Durkin’s third feature is more than competently executed, with a solid ensemble cast and a vivid sense of place and time, without overdoing the needle drops. But considering the shattering blows delivered to the Von Erichs at regular intervals throughout the story, its emotional impact feels oddly muted."

The Iron Claw will be released in the US on December 22 and in the UK on February 9, 2024.
