YWCA of Alliance honors its leaders, volunteers

YWCA of Alliance celebrated its volunteers during its recent 98th annual meeting.

The event included awards for leadership, volunteerism, and scholarships for Alliance area students.

Saprina Allen received the 2024 Black History Leadership & Service Award for advocacy work in various communities on such topics as home ownership, veterans issues, corporate responsibility and women's issues.

Emily Grindley received the 2024 Women's Leadership & Service Award for her dedication to teaching, coaching and volunteering in the Alliance community.

Pat Gates received the Fullmer Volunteer Leadership Award for her empathetic leadership and unwavering support to various boards and organizations in the community, especially to her dedication to the YWCA and its programs.

The YWCA Memorial Scholarship went to Emily Gainer of Marlington High School, and Olivia Dangler received the YWCA Middle School Geography Essay Scholarship. Lily Walker and Caroline Reich of Alliance High School received the YWCA Alliance Middle School Geography Bee Scholarship.

During the event, YWCA of Alliance welcomed five new board members – Jessica Sweger, Kelly Wittensoldner, Stephani Swisher, Julie Jakmides and Portia Johnson.

Retiring board members Michelle Sams, Niki McIlvain and Taylor Bates received thanks for their dedication.

Caitie Scott was introduced as the new president of YWCA of Alliance Board of Directors. Other executive board members are Kennie Long, president-elect; Janelle Jones, treasurer; and Jane Wearstler, secretary.

During the meeting, YWCA Executive Director Stacie Bacorn spoke about ways members of the community can work together to strengthen the Alliance area and create a fearless future. She emphasized the importance of open communication, collaboration, supporting local businesses, and investing in education to empower community members to achieve their goals.

Bacorn also discussed the issue of poverty, explaining YWCA is committed to providing education and skill-building opportunities, access to affordable housing and healthcare, and promoting policies and programs that address income inequality and create a more equitable society.

Bacorn said that by embracing the vision of a fearless future, we can create a brighter, more hopeful future for ourselves and future generations.
