Young and the Restless star and soap icon, Eric Braedan, has been diagnosed with cancer. The 82-year-old known for portraying Victor Newman in the beloved soap opera shared the news in a 13-minute Facebook Live video posted late last week. Fans are showering the actor with love and support.
“I hate to be this personal, but I think this may be good for some older guys who may or may not listen to this,” Braedan said during the Facebook Live. “It’ll happen to them. Your prostate grows as you grow older. Period. Everything grows. All the wrong things grow as you get older.”
Braeden said he noticed something was awry while recovering from knee surgery a few months ago. The star told fans during the emotional Facebook Live that he experienced frequent urination and issues with his prostate that eventually led to his cancer diagnosis. In the video, he took the opportunity to open up about his serious health news to ensure fans learn from his experience.
Fans flooded the comments with well-wishes and support for Braeden. One fan wrote, “Sending prayers and hugs. Love you!! You got this.” Another commented, “So glad you’re on the way to recovery!! Watch you every day ~ you’re my favorite character ❤️.”

The soap opera veteran appreciated the love and encouragement from fans, getting emotional. “I love your support,” he said. “It means a lot, okay. So, whenever you have someone in the family who goes through this, support them.”
Braedan offered fans even more insight into his health, revealing that he visited a urologist who recommended an eventual UroLift surgery, a minimally invasive treatment option for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), also known as a non-cancerous enlarged prostate. As if always having to pee was not bad enough, Braeden said things took a turn when he realized he could no longer urinate. “And that, my friends, I will tell you, was one of the most painful experiences I’ve had,” he said. The doctors put in a catheter, which provided immediate relief, but was only a temporary fix.
After removing the catheter and checking his bladder with a camera, Braedon recalled the doctor sending him on his way. But not long after, Braeden experienced such intense pain he went straight to a nearby hospital, which just so happened to be where the doctor pioneering UroLift surgery worked. Ultimately, Braedon underwent the UroLift surgery, the results of which found low-grade cancer cells and some high-grade cancer cells, which spread more quickly.
“I was taken aback, but I was determined to deal with it,” Braeden said of learning of his diagnosis.
As a result of the findings, Braedon began immunotherapy, which is a treatment that alters your immune system so that your body can fight off cancer. Braedon said he will receive weekly injections for six weeks as a part of the immunotherapy, and that he just received his second round of injections.
The 82-year-old noted that he was only feeling a little under the weather so far amidst treatment. “Hopefully it stays that way,” Braeden told his fans.
Through surgeries and treatment, Braeden is still acting and enthusiastic about staying on top of his health, “I’ve learned now to listen to my body more and not go all out,” he said.
The star remains positive about what lies ahead and ended his video with gratitude for fans and a hopeful message: “Nowadays, there is so much advancement in cancer treatment, you can survive it,” Braedan said.
