Young mom dies shielding 5-year-old twins in collision: ‘She didn’t deserve this death’

A young Michigan mother died in a hit and run this week when she used her body to shield her 5-year-old twins from the impact, according to local outlets.

Hillarie Galazka, 29, was heading home to Lincoln Park, about 11 miles southwest of Detroit, when her Saturn Ion was rear-ended, Fox 2 Detroit reported Thursday.

The crash occurred at around 11:25 p.m. local time Monday, Michigan State Police confirmed to the Daily News.

“Her body saved them,” Galazka’s mother Jodie Kelley, told Fox 2 Detroit. “The boys say they saw her open her eyes and look at them and then she closed her eyes, never opened them again. They remember that.”

As a result, Galazka’s boys sustained only minor injuries.

The twins’ uncle Jacob Galazka told the station that his sister, who also had an 8-year-old son not in the car at the time, was “a good-hearted, strong, beautiful woman. She didn’t deserve this death.”

The 25-year-old male suspected in the crash was driving on a suspended license with five current suspensions, Michigan State Police told Fox 2 Detroit. He also had two local warrants and two previous convictions.

Authorities found him at a hospital after he fled the scene.

Michigan State Police did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
