Young Girl, 13, Cleverly Uses Amazon’s Alexa to Save Herself from a Monkey Attack — Here's How!

The teenager used an Amazon Echo Dot (3rd Gen.) to fend off the monkeys in India earlier this month

A young girl's quick thinking saved herself and her niece from a monkey attack in India.

Earlier this month, Nikita, a 13-year-old girl in Uttar Pradesh's Basti, used her Amazon Alexa to scare off a group of wild monkeys that entered her home by asking the device to play sounds of a dog barking, PEOPLE has learned.

“A few guests visited our home, and they left the gate open. Monkeys entered the kitchen and started throwing things here and there," Nikita told India's ANI News.

Noting that her 15-month-old niece, who was also in the house with her at the time, "was scared," Nikita continued, "I saw Alexa and asked it to play the sound of a dog. Because of that barking sound, the monkeys were scared and ran away.”

In an interview with India's ABP Ganga, Nikita’s brother-in-law said monkeys are common in their area and are typically "very naughty."

The family member, who is the father of Nikita’s niece, also told the outlet that the technology — featured on an Amazon Echo Dot (3rd Gen.) — has been of great use to the family for many reasons.

"If you are using it in your daily life, you will understand how good it is," he said. "All the lights in our house, fan and the AC starts working with the help of a command."

The man added, "It also gives us the news update, the score of IPL, [and if you] ask any question — it answers. You can say almost everything."

In a statement to PEOPLE, an Amazon Alexa spokesperson said, "The incident in Basti is a great example of how quick thinking paired with easy-to-use technology like Alexa can be of assistance around the house."
