New Yorker Socheata is apartment hunting for a new space with high ceilings and plenty of natural light

On this episode of In The Know: Find My Dream Room, host Will Taylor (@brightbazaar) helps Socheata on her quest to find the Holy Grail of New York City apartments—a studio or one-bedroom with high ceilings, modern amenities, and plenty of space, with a budget of up to $3,000 a month. Socheata has been living in New York City for a year, but is hoping to level up with a bright, airy, and spacious apartment on the Upper West Side near Central Park. Can Will help Socheata find her perfect apartment? Let’s find out!

Apartment number one, which Will calls “The Musical Studio,” is a studio apartment that rents for $2,800 a month. The studio gets its name from the grand piano that sits in the corner of the spacious living room. Not only does the apartment have enough space to fit a piano, bed, and workspace, but it also comes with a large bathroom, a dishwasher, and plenty of kitchen counter space. On top of all these amenities, Socheata is also impressed by the high ceilings and great view.

Next, Will shows Socheata another studio, which he calls “The Cozy Nest.” This unit rents for $3,000 a month and features a large kitchen, gas stove, and plenty of bathroom cabinet space. The apartment also features high ceilings and a huge walk-in closet. Best of all, the apartment even comes with an in-unit washer-dryer! “You had me at washer-dryer,” Socheata jokes when she sees the appliance tucked away inside a closet. “We don’t need to see the rest [of the apartment].”

Finally, Will shows Socheata a one-bedroom unit he dubs “The Boho One-Bed.” This apartment rents for $3,000 and has “tons of character and charm,” according to Will. Socheata is drawn to the apartment’s quirky vibe, as well as its large bathroom, cute kitchenette, and separate bedroom. In addition to its spacious interior, the apartment comes with a private outdoor patio that’s perfect for lounging outside during the warmer months.

Four weeks later, Socheata shares that while she was impressed by the apartments Will showed her, she isn’t quite ready to move yet. “I’ve actually had a chance to check out some other parts of New York and don’t think I’m quite ready to pull the trigger just yet on a new apartment,” she explains. “For now I am going to keep looking.”
