New York Jets reportedly are open to trading former Chiefs receiver Mecole Hardman

Through five games, Jets wide receiver Mecole Hardman has caught every pass thrown his way this season.

Unfortunately for Hardman, he’s been targeted just once and has one reception for 6 yards. It came in Week 2 against the Dallas Cowboys. Hardman has played just 22 snaps on offense for the Jets.

That’s not what the Jets had in mind when they signed Hardman to a one-year, $4 million deal as a free agent.

Hardman had 152 catches and 2,088 receiving yards in four seasons with the Chiefs before becoming a free agent earlier this year. However, he was limited to eight regular-season games last season and underwent surgery for a core-muscle injury following the Chiefs’ Super Bowl LVII victory.

It’s possible that Hardman soon will be headed to a new team.

ESPN senior NFL reporter Jeremy Fowler said the Jets “are looking at options for Mecole Hardman, including a potential trade, per league sources.”

As Fowler noted, Hardman was a healthy scratch Sunday, and last month Hardman took exception to talk that he is frequently injured.

“I wish people would stop saying I be hurt a lot, that just shows who actually pay attention!” Hardman wrote on X (formerly Twitter). “Played every game for 3 years straight and had a freak injury half way through year 4. A injury where none of y’all don’t even have the slightest idea of what I dealt with when the injury occurred.”

Could the Chiefs try and bring back Hardman?

According to the NFL Players Association’s salary cap report, the Chiefs have a little less than $3.7 million in cap space, so it would be possible for Kansas City to add Hardman’s contract.
