New York City Ballet says it won’t return to stage before September 2021

New York City Ballet said Friday that it won’t return to its Lincoln Center stage until September 2021, officially scratching its winter and spring seasons.

The pandemic has kept the ballet off the stage of the David H. Koch Theater since March, and its popular performance of “The Nutcracker” will be sidelined this holiday season for the first time in more than a half-century.

In a meeting on Thursday, the company’s board of directors decided to cancel the upcoming winter and spring seasons amid ongoing health concerns and government coronavirus regulations, City Ballet said.

The COVID-19 crisis has put a brutal dent in the ballet’s coffers, including a projected loss of more than $45 million in ticket sales, said Katherine Brown, the company’s executive director.

“The financial ramifications related to the ongoing pandemic have been staggering,” Brown said in a statement, adding that the expected return next year is nonetheless “very heartening.”

The ballet’s fall season next year is due to open Sept. 21.

The company said the 2021-22 season will include six world premieres, including new works by Sidra Bell and Andrea Miller.
