Yelp has the top five Augusta-area Mexican restaurants to celebrate Cinco de Mayo

For those who don't know any Spanish, Cinco de Mayo is once again returning on May 5. It's not to be confused with Mexican Independence Day, which is Sept. 16. According to Britannica, Cinco de Mayo celebrates a major military victory over the French in 1862, and the day has since become a symbol of Mexican resistance to foreign domination.

More than a century later, it's become a popular holiday celebrating Mexican culture, and is one of the biggest days of the year for Mexican restaurants. But the Augusta area has so many, how do you pick which one to visit?

Here's a look at Yelp's top five in the area and what they are offering for Cinco de Mayo:

1. Taqueria El Patron

3107 Washington Rd., Augusta

There are plenty of great Mexican eateries along Washington Road, but the best according to Yelp is Taqueria El Patron with delectable dishes like mini burritos, "Mexican Sushi," and chicken mole. No Cinco de Mayo specials had been released as of Friday.

Here's what one Yelp reviewer said: "We absolutely loved the experience. ... The establishment was very clean and chill. Our server was so sweet and the food was amazing."

2. Taqueria Mi Casita

3935 Washington Rd., Martinez

Further down in the Columbia County section of Washington Road is another favorite, Taqueria Mi Casita, wowing guests with delicacies such as street tacos, churro cheesecake bites, and tamales. These and more can be purchased for dining-in, to-go, or at the drive-thru. No Cinco de Mayo specials had been released as of Friday.

Here's what one Yelp reviewer said: "Best tacos in the CSRA hands down. ... If you want delicious, authentic tacos in a casual ambiance/space and great service this is the place you want to go."

3. Taqueria El Rey

3830 Washington Rd., Martinez

There are stables like burritos and chimichangas as well as more unique dishes like pizzabirria and a fajita-style baked potato at Taqueria El Rey. Cinco de Mayo specials will run all weekend (Friday-Sunday) with all tequila shots (including top-shelf) for $5 in addition to margarita deals, including specials on their margarita towers.

Here's what one Yelp reviewer said: "It may not look like much from the outside or from photos online but this place is the place to be. ... We split the queso fundido, it was delicious. I ordered the gordita specials, and It was filling. I'll definitely be coming back."

4. Lokos Tacos

2825 Washington Rd., Martinez

Despite what the name may suggest, Lokos Tacos has much more than tacos. Just some of the other menu items include a Mexican-style burger, street-style corn on the cob, and enchiladas michoacanas. On Cinco de Mayo, there will be a patio fiesta with a DJ and contests as well as a range of specials.

Here's what one Yelp reviewer said: "Nice little hole in the wall Mexican restaurant. ... Great ambiance. Beautiful murals and décor. Excellent customer service. Wonderful food."

5. Taco Madre

3450 Wrightsboro Rd., Augusta

One of the Augusta Mall's newer dining options is Taco Madre, a small Illinois-based chain with a variety of breakfast, American, Mexican, and Madre-style tacos with options to build-your-own or regular menu recipes. There are also margaritas, quesadillas, and taquitos. No Cinco de Mayo specials had been released as of Friday.

Here's what one Yelp reviewer said: "I hesitate to eat Mexican food anywhere outside of San Diego these days, but decided to try it out based on reviews. I've been twice now and loved it both times. Everything is made fresh, salsas are delicious, staff is friendly and helpful."
