Happiness for Beginners, the new Netflix movie starring Ellie Kemper and Yellowstone's Luke Grimes, has received brutal reviews upon its release.

The romcom follows Kemper’s Helen as she books a survivalist course following a divorce, with the newfound surroundings of the Appalachian Trail providing a background as she meets Jake (Grimes), a friend of her younger brother.

The film has failed to convince the critics, however, with Rotten Tomatoes reporting a meagre 28% approval rating thus far from 18 reviews.

Below you can read snippets from selected reviews:

Observer

“Happiness for Beginners is a shrug of a movie with a side of sweet self-reflection... It’s a bland story executed blandly, with comedy that doesn’t make the cut and a romance that’ll leave you sighing in frustration rather than swooning.”

The Guardian

“Throughout it all, Kemper visibly strains to temper her comedic impulses. Sometimes she delivers her lines with a quickness that feels refreshingly out of place, but it’s mostly call-and-response songs along the trails and heart-to-hearts under the stars.”

IndieWire

“Too light on its feet to schlep around Helen’s baggage, but also too sincere about her wishy-washy spiritual growth to embrace its comic potential, Wight’s film top priority is to be as pleasant as possible at all times.”

Ready Steady Cut

“An excruciatingly dull and patronising love child of Wild and The Big Year that is virtually free of humour and anything remotely interesting.”

The Hollywood Reporter

“The woman at its centre remains opaque, her romance is listless and her journey to self-discovery becomes an endurance test.”

The Spool

“Happiness for Beginners shows absolutely no sign of director/writer Vicky Wight's personality. It doesn't feel like any person's perspective at all—instead, it prioritises the glossy, inoffensive, and unremarkable Netflix aesthetic.”

The New York Times

“It’s destined to be thrown on in the background of a well-kept Airbnb after a long day of hiking in the Northeast.”
