This year's Thanksgiving Herald-Mail will be filled with more than just ads

As we get things set up for giving thanks later this week, I wanted to take a minute to clue you in on some things we'll be serving up in your Thanksgiving Day newspaper, as well as online.

First off, your Thanksgiving print edition will actually arrive on Wednesday. On Thursday, The Herald-Mail will be available only via our e-Edition at www.heraldmailmedia.com. It will have more stories, plus our daily puzzles and comics.

For the Wednesday edition, as usual, it'll be chock full of ads to local retailers, allowing you to get started on your Christmas shopping.

But we've got more in store for you than just ads.

There will be plenty of strong stories, good reads and some fun to tease your brain, too.

For example, reporter Tamela Baker is following up on her series of stories published earlier this fall about how Washington County has seen more than $1.3 billion in investments over the past few years as new projects and businesses come online.

In this story, she takes a tour of several recently remodeled apartments to answer the question, what's it like to live downtown? Spoiler alert: It's not what you think.

State House reporter Dwight A. Weingarten will take a look at the current race to replace Maryland's retiring senior U.S. senator, Ben Cardin. We'll have stories talking to the frontrunners about their vision for the state and the nation.

Sports reporter Andy Mason has a profile of Jim Martin, 75, who coached multiple sports at St. Maria Goretti Catholic High School in the 1970s and '80s and had great success. Martin’s had an interesting life, once singing for the pope at the Vatican and once leading the prestigious JFK 50 Mile ultramarathon at halfway. He rarely drives, walking nearly everywhere he needs to go.

We'll also have stories to help you out if you're looking for a restaurant that will be open on Thanksgiving Day, plus give you a heads up on what will be open on Black Friday, if you're so inclined to venture out.

But our Thanksgiving paper will also have a special bonus section, featuring:

  • A guide to sports viewing for the holiday weekend

  • Two full pages of recipes, plus the numbers for food-related hotlines, should you overcook the sweet potatoes

  • The Giant Thanksgiving Crossword. And I mean giant. It'll be two facing pages across to test your and your family's puzzle-solving skills

  • Kids coloring and games, as well as other games and puzzles for adults

  • The folks at Reviewed, part of the USA TODAY Network, will provide their ratings for hot items this holiday

  • More stories about how Americans are giving thanks this holiday, as well as a list of important dates to remember through the season

So be sure to pick up your copy of The Herald-Mail on Wednesday. It'll be a good one.

And if you'd rather read us online, be sure to check us out through the week when we'll be publishing these and other local stories aimed at getting you through the holiday season.
