Andrew Velazquez has been living the dream ever since the New York Yankees called him up to the major leagues earlier this month. His sample size in the Bronx has been small, but there’s no question that he has been delivering for his hometown team.

On Saturday afternoon, Velazquez’s story took yet another interesting turn when he hit his first career home run.

During the bottom of the eighth inning, Velazquez swung at the first pitch from Minnesota Twins reliever Ralph Garza Jr. and sent the ball over the right-field porch. Of course, the crowd at Yankee Stadium gave Velazquez a standing ovation as he went around the bases.

Velazquez’s family, meanwhile, was very emotional seeing him hit his first career home run in the MLB. The camera crew for FOX showed a few of his family members in tears while watching from the stands.

What made this moment so special for the Velazquez family is the fact that he was born and raised in the Bronx. It’s only fitting that he managed to hit his first MLB home run while wearing pinstripes.

Following the win on Saturday afternoon, Velazquez revealed that a fan at Yankee Stadium kept telling him to hit his first home run.

“Some guy kept screaming at me that I should hit my first one, every at-bat I got on deck,” Velazquez said in his postgame press conference, via NorthJersey.com. “‘Hit your first one, down the line!’ So, I went 0-for-3 before that, and then the final [at-bat], I said, ‘Let me take his approach, because mine ain’t working’.”

Velazquez also told reporters that the fan who caught his first home run kindly returned the ball to him. We’d imagine he’ll keep that ball somewhere safe for a very long time.
