World Snooker Championship LIVE: Latest scores and results

The World Snooker Championship 2023 resumes on Wednesday with former champions Judd Trump and Mark Selby in action at the Crucible.

The tournament has bounced back following the chaotic scenes on Monday during Robert Milkins’ clash with Joe Perry. A Just Stop Oil protester covered a table in bright orange powder, forcing a delay of around 40 minutes.

While a second protestor was seen attempting to climb onto the adjacent table where Mark Allen and Fan Zhengyi were playing, apparently attempting to affix themselves to it.

Jack Lisowski vs Noppon Saengkham and Kyren Wilson vs Ryan Day kick things off in the morning session, before Trump battles Anthony McGill and Selby faces Matthew Selt.

While Friday’s match between Ronnie O'Sullivan and Hossein Vafaei has extra spice after the Iranian’s criticism of the seven-time champion - follow all the latest scores and results below:

World Snooker Championship 2023 - Day 5

Selby leads Selt 6-2 at World Snooker Championship 2023

17:41 , Mike Jones

Great from Selt! A long pot to the bottom right corner gets the Englishman on the board after Selby’s break.

He can only manage a break of 13 before leaving the cueball near the top cushion.

Selby leads Selt 6-2 at World Snooker Championship 2023

17:35 , Mike Jones

Wonderful from Mark Selby! A century break from the world number two earns him any frame. A break of 131 increases the pressure on Matthew Selt.

Selby leads Selt 5-2 at World Snooker Championship 2023

17:27 , Mike Jones

Selby calls for the rest to nurse a red into the top red pocket. He takes the first points of the eighth frame and looks to extend his break.

Selby leads Selt 5-2 at World Snooker Championship 2023

17:21 , Mike Jones

Clinical from Selby. He takes advantage of Selt’s mistake and moves further ahead in the match. Two frames to go in the session, can Selt pull one back?

Selby leads Selt 4-2 at World Snooker Championship 2023

17:15 , Mike Jones

There’s an audible groan from the crowd as Selby’s break finishes at 44. Selt takes over and looks okay until he over screws the cueball and leaves a tough angle on the pink.

Missed! It was a tough shot and Selt nurses the cushion of the bottom left pocket. Selby leads 44-21 and can tidy up the frame.

Judd Trump speaking to the BBC

17:08 , Mike Jones

“I had plenty of chances, missed a lot of easy balls. Anthony scored a lot heavier, he was always going to be tough. I had enough chances to win, I only have myself to blame.

“It was two or three times I should have got back level, easy balls, Anthony scored a lot heavier, I needed two or three chances every time, you won't win at the World Championships like that.

“It's been a struggle, a lot more easy balls missed than I have done for a long time, maybe the concentration isn't there. I hung in there, anything can happen.

“When you keep going two frames behind, it's demotivating, you can't afford to miss easy balls.

“I need a break, maybe playing some more people in practice to stay sharp, it's a struggle on your own, not enough match practice, maybe next year playing a few more good players in practice.”

Reaction from Anthony McGill

17:03 , Mike Jones

“It’s incredible, it’s right up there. Obviously he’s a world champion so to beat guys like that it’s unbeliveable. It’s a great, tremendous couple of days for me.

“I think I just delude myself. Every 10 or 20 minutes the balls get reset and you play another frame. It doesn’t matter what the score is and it doesn’t matter if I’m ahead or behind. I just keeping playing frames of snooker until you get sent home or you get a trophy.

“I’d much prefer to be a seed but I’ve always felt that you’re much better prepared if you come through the qualifying round. Even for guys as good as Judd, it’s not easy coming here with no matches against a qualifier who has played matches.

“I believe I can with this. There’s no doubt in my mind that I can beat anybody here but they can beat me as well. I enjoy the long matches, the best player will always win. In matches of this length whoever plays better will usually win.”

Anthony McGill defeats Judd Trump 10-6 at World Snooker Championship 2023

16:53 , Mike Jones

There it is! Anthony McGill completes his victory over a subdued Judd Trump. The first half of that session would have been a little frustrating for McGill as Trump seemed to be mounting a comeback.

The Scot stuck to his guns though and came back out of the interval in superb form and won three frames in a row to advance to the second round.

McGill leads Trump 9-6 at World Snooker Championship 2023

16:50 , Mike Jones

No he can’t!

Trump had to go for the tight pocket but leaves McGill on a red to the middle right. The Scotsman rolls it in and is back on the charge to victory.

Three or four more reds, with colours, and he’ll progress to the next round.

McGill leads Trump 9-6 at World Snooker Championship 2023

16:48 , Mike Jones

Chance! McGill is aggressive and doesn’t get a good angle off the black. He kisses the pocket with his next shot at a red and has to settle for a break of 45.

Trump has a chance to get back into the match, can he take it?

McGill leads Trump 9-6 at World Snooker Championship 2023

16:45 , Mike Jones

There’s a bit of nervous tension as Anthony McGill pockets a red then the pink to open up a break. There are five or six open reds for him to collect before he needs to split the pack.

McGill is closing in on this match.

McGill leads Trump 9-6 at World Snooker Championship 2023

16:37 , Mike Jones

Anthony McGill takes the frame 72-6 and moves within one of victory. Judd Trump has to win four frames in a row to get through.

That is tough to do.

McGill leads Trump 8-6 at World Snooker Championship 2023

16:35 , Mike Jones

No! It’s not to be for Trump. He plays a couple of great shots to screw the cueball into the pink and spread out the reds then misses his next colour.

A break of 6 and no more. McGill should tidy up now.

McGill leads Trump 8-6 at World Snooker Championship 2023

16:33 , Mike Jones

Oh my. McGill misses the black from its spot and leaves the door ajar for Judd Trump. McGill’s break ends at 44.

The table isn’t great though. There are a lot of bunched up reds and Trump will probably need at least one snooker to be comfortable.

McGill leads Trump 8-6 at World Snooker Championship 2023

16:30 , Mike Jones

McGill is on the charge. For the first time in the session he scores first - against the break - and quickly notches up 15 points before sliding in the pink from a tight angle.

Superb play from the Scot, can he capitalise and move within one frame of victory?

McGill leads Trump 8-6 at World Snooker Championship 2023

16:25 , Mike Jones

Cool, calm and calculated play from Anthony McGill sees him extend his lead. It’s impressive from the Scot who didn’t have a great session earlier.

McGill is now just two frames away from victory. Work for Trump to do, he needs to cut out the mistakes if he wants to continue this comeback.

McGill leads Trump 7-6 at World Snooker Championship 2023

16:14 , Mike Jones

Chance for McGill!

Trump’s positional shot off the blue isn’t the best and his misses threading a red into the bottom right. His break ends at 6 and McGill has an open table.

This is his frame to lose.

McGill leads Trump 7-6 at World Snooker Championship 2023

16:12 , Mike Jones

Anthony McGill would like to get a frame on the board early on in this session. Judd Trump manage to score first in each of the four frames earlier on and McGill was playing catch-up.

A mistake from the Scot leaves a red open on the middle right pocket. Trump rolls it in and is on the board first again.

16:06 , Mike Jones

The interval is almost over and the final session of the first round match between Judd Trump and Anthony McGill is about to continue.

Who will triumph?

McGill leads Trump 7-6 at World Snooker Championship 2023

15:50 , Mike Jones

Mark Selby is also in action this afternoon and currently leads Matthew Selt 3-1 after their first four frames. That’s a great start for the world number 2.

McGill leads Trump 7-6 at World Snooker Championship 2023

15:48 , Mike Jones

A slice to the bottom left pocket leaves Trump on the pink and he rolls that one in to extend his lead. The table is wide open now and it’s simple task to claim the frame.

Trump wins the session 3-1 and is right back in the match at the interval.

McGill leads Trump 7-5 at World Snooker Championship 2023

15:44 , Mike Jones

Everytime Trump has tried to secure this frame a slight error has forced him to play safe. His most recent break only brings five points before he has to relinquish control.

McGill is still in with a chance to nick the frame. Trump leads 49-0.

McGill leads Trump 7-5 at World Snooker Championship 2023

15:42 , Mike Jones

Trump is being patient.

He’s playing the safety game and forcing McGill to make the decisive shots. A wild stroke from the Scot leaves Trump with the slenderest of pots to slicing a red past the green which is over the cushion.

He sinks it! Quality from Trump who is back on a break.

McGill leads Trump 7-5 at World Snooker Championship 2023

15:39 , Mike Jones

McGill is left with a horrible shot from this snooker. He goes off the top cushion and wants to leave the cueball near the back cushion instead.

He fouls twice before achieving his aim. It’s a decent safety but it’s cost him eight points.

McGill leads Trump 7-5 at World Snooker Championship 2023

15:35 , Mike Jones

It’s a cautious approach from Trump but he needs to deal with an awkward red. Two balls are touching and Trump cannons the plant into the bottom left pocket!

Great shot but the cueball finishes in the middle of the table and he’s not on a colour. That’s unfortunate and Trump leaves it behind the yellow with a safety.

He leads 36-0 after a 26 break.

McGill leads Trump 7-5 at World Snooker Championship 2023

15:30 , Mike Jones

Trump is off the mark first once again after a lovely long pot. He can only muster a break of 10 before playing a safety though.

This is potentially a massive frame. If Trump wins this match is well and truly alive but should McGill take it then Trump’s efforts this afternoon will have yielded no advantage.

McGill takes on a long pot down the right hand cushion but kisses the pocket, it’s an opportunity for Trump who takes it to start a new break.

McGill leads Trump 7-5 at World Snooker Championship 2023

15:25 , Mike Jones

Over on table two, Mark Selby is two frames up against Matthew Selt. The world number two is living up to his ranking.

Trump breaks off frame 13 against McGill. This will be the last frame before an interval for these two, who’s going to take it?

McGill leads Trump 7-5 at World Snooker Championship 2023

15:22 , Mike Jones

In the last frame Anthony McGill missed a simple cut to when he should have gone on to win. There’s no such mistake this time around.

McGill racks up a break of 94, his best of the session so far and moves back in front by two frames. Fine work.

McGill leads Trump 6-5 at World Snooker Championship 2023

15:19 , Mike Jones

Trump’s break ends at 40. A misjudge of pace leaves the cueball too far down the table and unfortunately there’s no reds on. Trump plays a safety to the top cushion and lets McGill decide if he wants to take on a long red.

The Scot decides against it and nestles the cueball back down the table and leaves it behind a couple of reds. Good response from him.

This battle of safety shots comes to end after a mistake from Trump, he cannons the cueball into the brown and leaves McGill open on a red to the bottom left pocket.

McGill slides it in and has control of the table.

McGill leads Trump 6-5 at World Snooker Championship 2023

15:15 , Mike Jones

Beautiful from Trump.

He rolls in the blue and screws the cueball into the pink to shatter the remaining reds. There’s a few he can choose from but the black is in an awkward position now and he’ll have to work with the blue from the middle of the table instead.

McGill leads Trump 6-5 at World Snooker Championship 2023

15:11 , Mike Jones

Onto the 12th frame then. A battle of safety shots ensues before Trump elects to take on long red and ricochets it off the pocket.

McGill has a tricky follow up shot but misses it too! Trump gets on the board first once again.

McGill leads Trump 6-5 at World Snooker Championship 2023

15:06 , Mike Jones

Let off for Trump! McGill misses a red after a break of 28 leaving Trump needing to pot one red and a colour to take the frame.

That’s going to annoy McGill.

Trump rolls in the red and follows with by slicing in the black. With only the colours left, Trump begins to relax and rolls them all in. He takes the 11th frame 101-28.

McGill still leads 6-5 but Trump has taken back-to-back frames.

McGill leads Trump 6-4 at World Snooker Championship 2023

15:02 , Mike Jones

Trump escapes the snooker but leaves McGill with a long red to the top right corner. The Scotsman pots it and opens up the chance to win the frame.

It’ll be a big turnaround if he can clean up here. There is a cluster of three reds which will be difficult to shift though.

McGill leads Trump 6-4 at World Snooker Championship 2023

15:00 , Mike Jones

A break of 58 from Trump brings McGill back to the table with a chance to recover the frame. He’s left with a long fine cut into the bottom left corner but sinks it!

Trump leads 62-1 but the cue ball finishes in an awkward position and McGill elects for the snooker. This is tense.

McGill leads Trump 6-4 at World Snooker Championship 2023

14:54 , Mike Jones

Advantage Trump again! He takes on a tricky cut into the bottom left pocket but nestles the red home and leaves himself on the black.

This will be a frustrating start for Anthony McGill. There’s a few loose reds available for Trump to mop up before his break is done.

McGill leads Trump 6-4 at World Snooker Championship 2023

14:51 , Mike Jones

Judd Trump’s break leaves the cue ball behind the yellow and Anthony McGill attempts a soft shot off the cushion into the pack of reds.

He underhits the shot and leaves it short making a foul and giving away four points. His follow up is a much better shot and wedges the cue ball between two of the reds.

Nice recovery.

McGill leads Trump 6-4 at World Snooker Championship 2023

14:47 , Mike Jones

Trump takes the frame! He only trails by two.

After the earlier break of 42, he tries cleans up the table adding 68 points before missing a tricky shot on the green. It’s Trump’s second highest break of the match and that will settle him for the rest of the session.

Game on now.

McGill leads Trump 6-3 at World Snooker Championship 2023

14:42 , Mike Jones

McGill attempts to get on the board with a long red down the cushion. The ball double kisses the pocket and bounces out.

This should be Trump’s frame now.

McGill leads Trump 6-3 at World Snooker Championship 2023

14:41 , Mike Jones

Oh lovely! A bad angle off the pink leaves Trump with a thin cut into the middle pocket on his next red but he sinks it to maintain his break.

That’s a couple of times in this frame that he’s been out of position but managed a pot. Another miscue brings his break to a close with a safety shot to the back cushion.

He leads by 42 as Anthony McGill comes up to the table.

McGill leads Trump 6-3 at World Snooker Championship 2023

14:39 , Mike Jones

Trump attempts to scatter the clustered reds by back spinning the cue ball into them after another pot of the black. It doesn’t quite come off as he’d hoped but he manages to maintain his break with a cut into the bottom right pocket.

It’s up to 27 and counting now with the reds slightly more spread out. Still work to do though to secure this frame.

McGill leads Trump 6-3 at World Snooker Championship 2023

14:36 , Mike Jones

Anthony McGill breaks off in the first frame of this session. A reminder that this is a best of 19 - first to 10 - frame game.

McGill makes a slight error playing a safety shot and cannons into the green leaving Trump with a long red to open the scoring. He makes it and follows up with a nice slice on the black.

Advantage Trump in this frame now, how many points can he rack up in this break?

McGill leads Trump 6-3 at World Snooker Championship 2023

14:30 , Mike Jones

In yesterday’s session Anthony McGill seriously impressed. At 3-2 down, he began scoring heavily and rattled off four frames in a row to lead by three frames ahead of today’s outing.

Is there a way back for Trump or will McGill power to victory?

Snooker World Championship afternoon session

What was the snooker protest about? Video shows Just Stop Oil incident

14:09 , Mike Jones

Play was halted at the Crucible during the World Snooker Championship after a protester wearing a Just Stop Oil t-shirt ran into the arena, jumped onto the table and scattered a bag of orange powder across the surface.

The incident happened during Robert Milkins’ clash with Joe Perry in the evening session, forcing a delay of around 40 minutes before any play resumed.

“We’ve got a protester who is throwing powder on the table - I’ve never seen the likes of this before,” said the shocked commentator on Eurosport as events unfolded.

“He’s being roundly booed by the audience but play is going to have to be suspended while they deal with the mess on the table.”

13:20 , Jamie Braidwood

There it is! Lisowski holds off an improved display from Saengkham in the day’s second session to book his place in the next round. Saengkham potted the cue ball as he tried to set up a snooker - and Lisowski made sure to take the frame as he potted a long blue. From there, Saengkham couldn’t find the snooker he needed to extend the contest any further, and Lisowski finished it with the pink.

Ok, maybe it’s time for Lisowski to be feeling a little nervous... Saengkham makes his first century of the match to further trim the Englishman’s lead to two. Lovely play from the Thailand player, who has been brilliant since interval.

He races into an opening break of 65 and then tidies up nicely after Saengkham put 23 on the board.

Wow - chaotic scenes in the 11th frame!

Lisowski has given this one away - gift wrapped, you may say - and Saengkham finally takes advantage to reduce the Englishman’s lead.

It went down to the black after Lisowski missed his chance to clear up - with both players level on 61-61.

Lisowski skewed his safety shot but Saengkham missed the easiest of chances, followed by another clear shot.

Lisowski allowed Saengkham another chance but this time he took it.

That was a bit like watching pool in the pub.

Once again, Saengkham out to a lead 45-29...

Ronnie O’Sullivan slammed by snooker rival: ‘He’s a nice person when he’s asleep’

09:38 , Jack Rathborn

Ronnie O’Sullivan’s second-round opponent at the World Snooker Championship. Hossein Vafaei, has stoked the rivalry between the pair by suggesting the seven-time world champion is “a nice person when he’s asleep”.

Vafaei produced a scintillating session of snooker to turn an overnight 5-4 deficit against Ding Junhui into a thumping 10-6 win in their first-round encounter, before using the post-match interview to add fuel to the fire ahead of his clash with O’Sullivan.

Vafaei - who became the first Iranian player to win a match at the Crucible Theatre by beating Ding - is known for his showmanship on and off the baize and was keen to stress that facing the consensus greatest snooker player of all time held no fear for him.
