Wooden plank smashes through windshield on California highway. How was nobody injured?

Crystal Christman was driving on her to way work Saturday night when she noticed something pop up from the back of a white pick up truck that had just passed.

It was a split second thing. She didn’t have time to recognize the object as a 6-foot plank of carpeted wood hurling toward her.

“It can just happened so quickly,” says Christman, who shared pictures of the aftermath of the collision on her Facebook page.

“There was nothing you could do.”

In the images, the plank can be seen sticking out of the SUV’s front windshield. It appears to have hit the SUV’s bumper and hood before punching a hole in the window on the passenger’s side, striking the center console, just inches from Christman.

She was driving on east on Highway 145 toward Table Mountain Casino and was near near Highway 41 when the truck passed. She assumes the piece of wood wasn’t secured properly, came free and bounced out of the back toward her vehicle.

The truck didn’t stop, she says, and a report was filed with the California Highway Patrol.

Typically, Christman shares the SUV with her fiance and he would have been dropping her off at work, but she was driving alone on Saturday and luckily, no one was injured.

“The way it happened, happened perfectly in a sense,” she says.

She says she wants to drivers to be extra diligent when hauling any kind of large item and to tie things down, even if they already seem secure.

“I’ll definitely think twice before I put anything in my car, or on my car,” she says.

Along with her job at Table Mountain, Christman operates a gift basket company called The Basket Case and uses the SUV to make deliveries into Fresno and Clovis.

“My car is my main source of income,” she says.

She is driving a rental car while waiting for the windshield to be replaced.

Christman hopes the truck’s driver sees her story and gets in contact. She could use help with the $500 insurance deductible.
