The Wonder Years Cancelled at ABC

There won’t be any more gatherings for the Williams family.

ABC’s revival of The Wonder Years has been cancelled after two seasons, our sister site Deadline reports. Season 2 wrapped up last month, with the two-part Aug. 16 finale drawing a season low of 1.2 million and 1 million total viewers.

A reimagining of the beloved comedy starring Fred Savage, the series followed Dean’s (played by Elisha Williams) humorous recollections — as narrated by Don Cheadle — of growing up in a Black middle-class family in Montgomery, Alabama in the late ‘60s.

The cast also included Dulé Hill as Dean’s father Bill, Saycon Sengbloh as his mother Lillian, Laura Kariuki as his big sister Kim, Spence Moore II as his older brother Bruce, Milan Ray as his crush Keisa, Julian Lerner has his best friend Brad, Amari O’Neil as his other best friend Cory and Allen Maldonado as Coach Long. Plus, Insecure alum Yvonne Orji guest-starred as Bruce’s girlfriend Tammy.

While mostly existing as a completely separate show, the Season 1 episode “Love and War” revealed a heartbreaking connection to the original series when Bruce explained the death of his friend Brian, Winnie Cooper’s older brother, who died in the Vietnam War. In Season 2, Lindsay Sloane, who played Kevin and Winnie’s friend on the original Wonder Years, returned to play Brad Hitman’s mother Judy.

ABC still has not announced whether The Rookie: Feds or Home Economics will return for another season. TVLine’s Renewal Scorecard has been updated to reflect the Wonder Years news. Will you miss reminiscing with Dean and his family? Hit the comments to share your reaction to the cancellation.
