A woman was in serious condition after she was struck on a Fresno roadway Saturday night.

The collision occurred at 9:45 p.m. on Gettysburg Avenue near First Street.

Police Lt. Robert Dewey said the woman was crossing Gettysburg and was not in a crosswalk. A driver did not see the woman and struck her.

“We have witnesses traveling behind the vehicle who said the same thing,” Dewey said. “No time to stop before the pedestrian crossed.”

The woman was taken to a local hospital and sustained “significant” injuries to the head. Dewey said the woman was conscious and breathing, but unresponsive. She was reportedly in surgery early Sunday morning.

Neither alcohol nor drugs are suspected. Dewey said the driver was traveling at the posted speed limit of 40 mph.

The roadway was closed for two hours during the investigation.
