Woman pleads guilty to making false statements after reporting a kidnapping attempt

ZANESVILLE — Following an investigation into an April 17 attempted abduction on McConnell Avenue, the Zanesville Police Department has concluded that Makayla Wood made the whole thing up, according to a press release issued Monday morning by Detective Sgt. Phil Michel.

Wood pleaded guilty in Muskingum County Common Pleas Court on May 10 to one count of making false alarms, a fifth-degree felony.

According to an earlier ZPD press release from Michel, a report was received around 1:35 p.m. April 17 from Wood, who stated she was outside with her infant child when a dark gray, 4-door Nissan sedan with a female driver and male passenger parked in the driveway. The man approached her claiming he was with Child Protective Services, and he was there to take her child.

Wood told police at the time she felt something was wrong and ran into her house to call police, according to the press release.

Police said another witness reported that the same vehicle had come to the residence about 45 minutes earlier and a different man was asking for an individual who did not live there.

Wood’s sentencing will be scheduled at a later date.
