A Chicago woman lured a pregnant 19-year-old into her home and cut the baby from her womb in 2019, Chicago officials said, according to news outlets.

Now the woman has been sentenced to 50 years in prison, outlets reported.

Clarisa Figueroa pleaded guilty to murder after officials said she killed Marlen Ochoa-Lopez, who was 9 months pregnant at the time, five years ago, according to WGN.

Figueroa, 51, was sentenced to 50 years in prison without the option for early release on parole, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.

Officials said Figueroa lured Ochoa-Lopez into her home, promising her free baby clothing after connecting through Facebook, and strangled her, WGN reported. She then called 911 and told the operator she had just given birth and the child was not breathing, prosecutors told WBBM.

Ochoa-Lopez’s body was wrapped in a blanket and plastic bag before it was dumped in a garbage can, according to WLS.

Detectives spoke with Figueroa at the hospital where she denied that Ochoa-Lopez came to her home, according to the Chicago Tribune. Eventually, a DNA test revealed Figueroa was not the infant’s mother, the outlet reported.

The child died approximately two months later, according to AP.

“The memory of my infant son’s last breath in my arms is complete agony,” Yovanny Lopez, the victim’s husband, said in a statement read in Spanish and English during sentencing, according to the outlet. “God’s justice will be served upon you the day you die.”

According to officials, Figueroa had been plotting to get a newborn for months, AP reported. She had told her family she was pregnant, posted ultrasound photos and decorated a nursery, according to a bond court proffer obtained by the outlet.

Figueroa made the announcement shortly after her 20-year-old son died of natural causes, according to the document.

Desiree Figueroa, Figueroa’s 29-year-old daughter, had agreed to testify against her mother in exchange for a 30-year sentence, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. She pleaded guilty to a murder charge in January, the outlet reported.

Clarisa Figueroa’s boyfriend was released on parole in 2023 after he was accused of helping conceal the crime and pleaded guilty to obstruction of justice, according to WBBM.
