Woman falls 50 feet to her death climbing an old refinery with friends, WA cops say

A woman was climbing an old refinery with her friends when she fell to her death, Washington police said.

The woman was pronounced dead Saturday, Sept. 17, after she plunged 50 feet from a structure at Gas Works Park, the Seattle Police Department said.

“The female, along with some friends, were reported to be climbing on the old refinery structure in the middle of Gas Works Park when it appears she fell through an opening in the walkway roughly 50 feet above the ground,” police said in a news release.

The area is closed to the public, police said. However, people regularly break through the fence to climb the old refinery.

Police do not suspect foul play and did not disclose the woman’s identity.

Gas Works Park has a play area and barn, and it’s known for its view of Seattle. The park has several restricted areas, including access to Lake Union and the old refinery, according to city officials.
