It pays to play: One Maryland grandmother follows this motto and buys lottery tickets each week.

“I have the same numbers that I play each time,” she told lottery officials in an Oct. 17 news release.

The loyal lottery player had a regular routine going to a 7-Eleven to purchase Bonus Match 5 and Pick 3/4/5 tickets, she told officials, but after seeing the giant Powerball jackpot on Oct. 11, she decided to break tradition.

She bought an extra Powerball ticket for her husband, she said.

The next day, her husband was out walking their dog when she decided to check the winning numbers.

“I checked the numbers and saw that I had some that matched,” she told officials. “I knew I had at least a $1,000 winning ticket.”

It wasn’t until she scanned the ticket with her Maryland Lottery app that she saw the true amount.

Her spur-of-the-moment ticket had won a $50,000 prize, lottery officials said.

Now, she just had to wait for her husband to get home to tell him the good news.

“She said, ‘I have something to show you’ and showed me the winning message on her phone,” her husband told lottery officials. “She’s lucky, so I thought it was a few hundred dollars, but not $50,000.”

The woman had previously won another $50,000 prize in 2017, they said.

The Abingdon couple said they plan to use the money for Christmas, a vacation and then will save the rest.

Abingdon is about 25 miles northeast of Baltimore.
