Witnesses post photos, videos of Raleigh Christmas Parade incident where 1 died

A truck pulling a float at the Raleigh Christmas Parade lost control and hit a parade participant, Raleigh Police said.

The girl, hit near the intersection of Hillsborough Street and Boylan Avenue, was taken to the hospital where she died of her injuries.

Police are investigating. The driver of the vehicle, Landen Christopher Glass, is charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle, careless and reckless, improper equipment, unsafe movement and carrying a firearm in a parade.

Witnesses say the incident involved a float and dancers from CC & Co. Dance. Here is the company’s post before the parade started earlier Saturday morning.

Later in the day, the dance company sent a note to parents of its students via its Facebook page:

News & Observer reporter Brian Gordon is on the scene and talking with members of the dance company about what they witnessed.

Olivia Brice, 14, part of CC Company dance group told The N&O: ”We started dancing in the parade, and then all of a sudden, we just heard a lot of honking. We saw the truck almost on our backs. And the truck just kept going faster. And then it stopped and someone was laid out on the ground.”

One witness said he was nearby when the incident happened.

“I was like 25 feet away from the parade incident in #raleigh. Terrifying. The faces of those girls on the floats was awful.”

The Holly Springs High School Dance Program tweeted its support for the dancers involved in the incident.

CBS17 reporter Hayley Fixler tweeted video of someone investigating the float after the incident.

Congresswoman Deborah Ross tweeted that she is praying for those injured.

Witness Bill Willden was interviewed at the parade by ABC11. He told the reporter he saw the out-of-control truck pass another truck and heard the driver yelling out of the window that he couldn’t stop.

Anthony Smith of Raleigh was at the parade with his family and witnessed the accident. He posted photos on Facebook.

The Raleigh Downtown Alliance tweeted its support for those affected by the incident: “We stand together with our community in support of everyone impacted.”
