The Wisconsin Department of Transportation announced two new specialty license plate designs: Suicide Prevention and Spay, Neuter, Adopt.

Two new specialty license plate designs are available in the state of Wisconsin — Suicide Prevention and Spay, Neuter, Adopt — the state Department of Transportation announced Wednesday.

In addition to the $15 fee for getting a special plate design, and an extra $15 per year for a personalized plate, each plate requires a $25 contribution to nonprofit organizations for the causes.

Proceeds from the first plate will go to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, which focuses on prevention, public education and raising funds for research. The second plate will benefit The Fix Is In, Inc., which provides support for spaying and neutering cats and dogs in Wisconsin.

There are over 50 specialty license plate designs in Wisconsin, most of which come with extra fees and a donation to support a cause. In 2023, the most popular designs included collector and hobbyist plates, military plates, Elkhart Lake's Road America plate, endangered resources plates and Green Bay Packers plates.

Earlier this year, lawmakers proposed adding a "blackout" plate design with a black background and white lettering, which exploded in popularity in Minnesota and Iowa and generated state revenue. But the bill didn't pass in the state Legislature this year, so those plates won't hit the road anytime soon.
