Winter storm bringing half a foot of snow to Orange, Dutchess counties

A winter storm brought more than half a foot of snow to Orange and Dutchess counties on Tuesday.

As of mid-afternon, the National Weather Service said 11 locations in Orange County had recorded 10 inches of snow or more.

They included Warwick with 13.4 inches, Chester with 13 inches, Highland Mills with 12.3 inches, Unionville with 11.8 inches, Fort Montgomery and Middletown with 11 inches, Goshen with 10.6 inches Washingtonville with 10.5 inches, Cornwall and Stewart Airport with with 10.4 inches, and Greenwood Lake with 10.3 inches. Weather service observers in five other communities in the region were reporting 7 inches of snow or more.

The National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning for Orange County through 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Tuesday forecast in mid-Hudson Valley

The county should expect anywhere from 6 to 9 inches to fall during the day, in addition to whatever fell overnight. Snow fell at a peak rate of 1 to 2 inches per hour for several hours during the morning, the weather service said.

Dutchess County is under a less severe winter weather advisory, which is scheduled to expire at 4 p.m., according to the National Weather Service. Anywhere from 2 to 6 inches of snow is expected during the day, in addition to any snow that fell overnight.

The weather service said locally higher amounts were possible in areas hit by a heavy band of snow.

Power outages follow morning snowfall

No storm warnings, watches or advisories have been issued for Ulster and Sullivan counties, but they are not escaping the storm entirely. The weather service said about 1 inch of snow is expected in Monticello, the county seat of Sullivan County, while less than half an inch is expected in Kingston, the county set of Ulster County.

The three power companies serving the region are reporting 257 customers without power as of just before noon.

Central Hudson said 98 of its customers in the city of Newburgh were without power, but hoped to have them restored by early afternoon.

In Dutchess County, Central Hudson said the number of customers without power was down from 78 earlier in the morning to 39. The utility hopes to have the remaining customers' power restored by 3 p.m.

Orange and Rockland Utilities said 60 customers in Sullivan County and 21 customers in Orange County have no power. The company did not have any estimated restoration times for those outages.

New York State Electric and Gas said 39 of its customers in Sullivan County's village of Monticello were without power. The company is estimating those customers will have power restored by shortly after 1 p.m.

A few crashes on the roads have been reported so far, including one rollover in Orange County, but none have involved serious injuries.
