Like wine? You’ll adore what’s underground at this California estate. Take a look

An estate with a lot of history – and some mystery – has landed on the real estate market in the famous Napa, California, area for $2.48 million.

And, good news for wine connoisseurs: It has its own winery in the basement.

It is absolutely a functioning winery,” home owner Marketta Fourmeaux told the Napa Valley Register. “I crush, ferment, age and bottle there. And I also store most of the case goods right there.”

Fourmeaux is considered “one of the most respected winemakers in America,” according to her website. “Her wines have been served at the White House as well as for European Presidents and earned 90 to 97 points ratings for 2 decades.”

Her stunning four-bedroom, 3.5-bathroom home has more features outside the 1,110-square-foot basement winery that include:

  • “Carefully designed” back yard

  • Porch

  • Garden

  • Bay windows

  • French pocket doors

  • Updated kitchen

According to the Napa Valley Register, there’s a shroud of mystery surrounding who built the house and when it was constructed. A member of the Napa County Historical Society thinks the house must have been moved to its current location in the early 1900s since 1901 maps show the lot as vacant.

“That implies to me is that the house was moved to the current location sometime between 1901 and 1910,” Kelly O’Connor of the Napa County Historical Society said to the Register. “So then the question is, where did it originally come from? If we can figure that out, we might be able to trace back the first owners.”

The listing is held by Carolyn Roberts of Coldwell Banker.
