Wimbledon school car crash – live: Girl, 8, killed and 15 injured as woman arrested and car seized

An eight-year-old girl has died and 15 others left injured after a Land Rover crashed into a girls’ prep school in Wimbledon, police have confirmed.

An end-of-term tea party was reportedly underway at The Study Prep school, in Camp Road, when the crash took place at around 10am on Thursday.

Detective chief superintendent Clair Kelland’s voice broke as she told a press conference: “Very sadly one of the children, an eight-year-old girl, died at the scene.”

She added: “This is a very difficult time for everyone here at the school and across the wider community.”

A woman in her 40s was arrested at the scene on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and remains in custody.

The Study Prep Wimbledon, with pupils aged between four and 11, declined to comment on the incident.

The all-girls school is located about a mile from the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club where the Wimbledon Grand Slam championship is currently taking place.

A stuffed toy and candles have also been placed at the scene in Wimbledon. According to reports, green netting has been used to cover where the building was damaged from impact with the Land Rover.

According to Press Association, the crime scene was quiet on Friday, with a few dog walkers and other passers-by looking at the flowers and damage.

‘Absolutely traumatised’: Local resident recalls seeing teachers and parents following crash

A local resident, who did not wish to be named, had been golfing when he was informed that a major incident had taken place at the school.

“We walked back to the clubhouse, and I heard someone was driving a car and had a seizure and drove through the school gates when they were playing in the playground,” he said.

He added that teachers and pupils who were being temporarily looked after by the golf club were “absolutely traumatised”.

A baby girl is believed to be among the victims of the crash at Wimbledon, according to unconfirmed reports from The Times.

An eight-year-old girl died and fifteen others were reported injured by the crash on Thursday at The Study Prep School’s end of term tea party.

A woman in her 40s was arrested at the scene on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and remains in custody. The force said the incident is not being treated as terror-related.

A day that started in celebration quickly descend into horror as a Land Rover ploughed through a primary school fence and into a tea party, killing a girl, 8, and injuring 15 others.

Sitting around picnic tables in the grounds of The Study Preparatory School in Wimbledon pupils and staff were caught unaware when the powerful 4x4 smashed into the garden, inflicting catastrophic injuries on those in its path.

Horrific aerial pictures show the car was finally brought to a halt when it rammed into a wall of the building, surrounded by benches where the victims had been enjoying a celebration to mark the last day of term at the southwest London school before the summer holidays.

Wimbledon MP offers condolences over ‘sad incident’

Wimbledon MP Stephen Hammond, whose daughter previously attended The Study Prep school, offered his condolences over the crash in the prep school building.

Speaking at the scene, Mr Hammond told the PA news agency: “It was very clear, very quickly, that it was a major incident and the local police declared it just that.

“I think you will have seen by the sheer scale of the response from the paramedics, air ambulance, fire brigade and the police what an important and serious incident this is.

“And what a sad incident - it is tragically on the last day of term, for this young girl to have lost her life.

“This is a well-liked, well-respected, well-known school.

“Most of the children who go here will be Wimbledon families, and this will cause shock across the whole of the local community.”

Chief paramedic confirms 16 people injured

Chief paramedic Dr John Martin from the London Ambulance Service said a total of 16 people were treated at The Study Preparatory School in Camp Road following the incident.

Dr Martin also gave an update at the press conference, saying: “At 9.54 we received a 999 call to a collision on Camp Road in Wimbledon.

“We dispatched multiple resources including specialist critical care paramedics, London’s air ambulance and 15 ambulances.

“We declared a major incident. We treated 16 patients on scene. Sadly, as we’ve heard, one eight-year-old girl died.”

‘Profoundly shocked’: School issues a statement over car crash

The Study Prep school has issued a statement over yesterday’s “tragic accident”, which claimed the life of an eight-year-old girl.

At least 10 people were taken to hospital after a Land Rover crashed into a school building on the last day of term.

“We are profoundly shocked by the tragic accident this morning at Wilberforce House and devastated that it has claimed the life of one of our young pupils as well as injuring several others,” said the school on its website.

“Our thoughts are with the bereaved family and with the families of those injured at this terrible time.

The prime minister’s official spokesman said Rishi Sunak thanked the emergency services for their swift response.

The spokesman said: “The prime minister’s deepest condolences are with the family of the girl who has tragically lost her life.

“His thoughts are with all those injured and involved in the horrific collision in Wimbledon this morning.

“This will have been a terrifying experience for all of the children, staff and parents.m

Mr Hammond said he was “very concerned” to hear about the “major incident”, adding: “My thoughts and prayers go out to everyone at The Study.”

He told the BBC: “Extraordinarily distressing and tragic incident on the last day of term … there has actually been a major incident declared. The air ambulance, the ambulance, the fire services, and the police are all in attendance.”

“The size of the response tells you how serious the incident is and there are a number of casualties, and I understand that a number of those are being treated as critical.”

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan described the incident as “devastating” and said: “My heart goes out to everyone affected.”

Home Secretary Suella Braverman said she was “saddened to hear about the tragic incident at the school in Wimbledon this morning”, adding in a tweet: “My thoughts are with everyone affected. I would like to thank emergency responders at the scene. It is important they are now able to carry out their investigation.”

Police are not treating the incident as terror-related.

Detective Chief Superintendent Clair Kelland, local police commander for southwest London, said: “This is tragic news and our thoughts are with the girl’s family and friends, and everyone affected today.

“We remain at the scene and are continuing our investigation into the full circumstances of the incident.”

A large police cordon is in place stretching onto Wimbledon Common where officers are moving dog walkers and passers-by away from the scene. An air ambulance was at the edge of the Common while a number of ambulances were parked nearby in the hours after the crash.

It is understood the Land Rover was being driven by a woman who suffered a medical incident, reported the Evening Standard. Police said the driver of the vehicle stopped at the scene but would not confirm any more about the possible cause of the crash.

The gold Land Rover reportedly crashed through an “end-of-term tea party”, with reports to The Mirror claiming “the children were sat on the grass with their teachers” when the car ploughing into them.

The London Ambulance Service said 16 people were treated at the scene.

Police have confirmed that they are not treating the incident as terror-related.

“We are not treating this incident as terror-related”, Merton Police confirmed via Twitter.

“An investigation is under way to understand the full circumstances of what has taken place.”

Officers, firefighters and paramedics, including London’s Air Ambulance, responded to the incident at around 9.54am on Thursday at The Study Preparatory School in Camp Road, Wimbledon.

The school, which costs £5,565 per term, is for girls aged four to 11 and sits on Wimbledon Common, just a mile away from the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club as it hosts the world-famous tennis tournament.

The Metropolitan Police said: “Officers are responding to an incident at a primary school in Camp Road, Wimbledon.

“We were called at 9.54am to reports that a car collided with a building at the school.

“Several people are being treated at the scene. We will share further updates when we can.”

Incident ‘extremely distressing and concerning’, says Wimbledon MP

Stephen Hammond, Conservative MP for Wimbledon, told BBC Radio London: “It’s obviously extremely distressing and extremely concerning.”

“I’ve just spoken to the local police, they are in attendance as are both air and paramedics.

“There are a number of casualties, I’m not clear how many. I know the area well, obviously.

“The area is really quite remote, but actually it’s a road that has quite a number of people that drive up and down it to the golf clubs.”

School declines to comment

Police said they were responding to a serious collision at a primary school in Wimbledon, south London, and several people were being treated at the scene.

“We were called at 09:54hrs on Thursday, 6 July to reports that a car collided with a building at the school in Camp Road,” London’s Met Police said in a statement.

London ambulance, including the air ambulance, and fire brigade services were also in attendance.

The police said they would provide further updates when possible. The Study Prep Wimbledon, also known as Wilberforce House, which is located on Camps Road, declined to comment when asked about the incident.

Camps Road is about a mile from the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club where the Wimbledon Grand Slam championship is currently taking place.
