Wimbledon 2023 LIVE: Novak Djokovic equals Roger Federer record after Elina Svitolina stuns Iga Swiatek

Novak Djokovic continued his Wimbledon defence as he saw off the challenge of Andrey Rublev to reach the semi-finals, while Ukrainian wildcard Elina Svitolina knocked out world No 1 Iga Swiatek to extend her stunning run at the Championships.

Djokovic responded brilliantly to losing the opening set against Rublev, the seventh seed, as the defending champion went on to clinch an entertaining 4-6 6-1 6-4 6-3 win.

In doing so, Djokovic reached the 46th grand slam semi-final of his career, which equals Roger Federer’s all-time record. It sets up a final-four rematch with Jannik Sinner, who led Djokovic by two sets in the quarter-finals last year.

Earlier, Svitolina produced a major upset as she defeated top seed Swiatek in three thrilling sets on Centre Court, as the Ukrainian continued her remarkable comeback. Svitolina only returned to tennis three months ago after giving birth to her first child and will now play Marketa Vondrousova, who defeated Jessica Pegula, for a place in the Wimbledon final.

Novak Djokovic, Andrey Rublev, and the moment a match became Wimbledon theatre

Tuesday 11 July 2023 20:20 , Mike Jones

It is almost remarkable that every step Novak Djokovic takes on Centre Court does not emit a low thud – an ominous boom oscillating around the grounds of the All England Club, the SW19 postcode, and in fact the wider Wimbledon area.

For such a sound would be a fitting soundtrack to the presence and progression of the seven-time champion at this tournament.

And while it would be irresponsible not to acknowledge the looming threats to Djokovic’s throne at Wimbledon this year, the reigning champion saw off another threat, another contender, another pretender to his crown on Tuesday, as the air of inevitability around the Serb intensified.

More from Djokovic who was told he’d matched Roger Federer’s record of reaching 46 Grand Slam semi-finals:

“In terms of the numbers, thank you for bringing them up but they’re just numbers at the end of the day. Especially during the tournament, I don’t like to spend too much time thinking about statistics. It’s a tournament that is active for me and I’m still in it.

“That’s all I’m thinking about right now. All I’m thinking about is directing my attention to my next match. It’s only going to get tougher I know that but I like the way I played today, the energy on the court also, so hopefully I can have another win in a few days’ time.”

She’s gone from wildcard to brink of the final, but Elina Svitolina’s fairytale is bigger than Wimbledon

Tuesday 11 July 2023 20:03 , Mike Jones

After almost three hours of understanding her role and executing a calculated game plan to perfection, Elina Svitolina was suddenly at a loss to explain what she had achieved. In stunning the world No 1 Iga Swiatek to reach the Wimbledon semi-finals, the Ukrainian wildcard, who only returned to tennis three months ago after becoming a mother, continued her fairytale comeback run in a story that is becoming bigger than the tournament. It could become greater still.

There will be no overshadowing this. After knocking out Victoria Azarenka in the previous round, delivering a victory for Ukraine against Belarus in a three-set thriller that was dominated afterwards by the Wimbledon crowd booing Azarenka off the court, Svitolina produced an even stronger performance against Swiatek. It’s a seismic shock, delivered by a wildcard with nothing to lose and who no longer sees tennis as the most important thing in her life.

But that, perhaps, is the explanation behind Svitolina’s stunning run. The 28-year-old is a former world No 3, previously reaching the Wimbledon semi-finals in 2019, but was often unable to produce her best form at the grand slams earlier in her career. Four years later, and only months after giving birth to her daughter Skai, Svitolina is performing better than ever while playing for something bigger than herself. She is representing a country at war and bringing hope to a nation torn apart by Russian invasion.

Elina Svitolina speaking after her victory over world number one, Iga Swiatek

Tuesday 11 July 2023 16:40 , Ben Fleming

“I don’t know what is happening right now in my head but it’s unbelievable. I’m really happy I got this chance to play here again. It was a great match, a great atmosphere and an unbelievable feeling. It was not easy to play against Iga [Swiatek]. Obviously, she’s world number one, she’s always fighting but today was an unbelievable match and I’m really happy I could win this one.

“Iga is not only a great champion but she’s also an unbelievable person. She was one of the first people that really helped Ukrainian people and it was a huge help for Ukraine. It’s not easy to play against someone who you have a lot of good moments with. I don’t think it was easy for her as well but I’m ust really proud of my effort and thank you for cheering for me all the way.”

On her preparations for the semi-finals: “First of all I’m going to have a beer. I’m just going to enjoy it with my team. At the beginning of the tournament, if someone told me that I would be in the semi-final and beating the world number one, I would have said they were crazy, so I’m just going to enjoy tonight, get some treatment and then regroup and be ready for the next big battle.”

Elena Rybakina faces Ons Jabeur in a rematch of last year’s Wimbledon final as the quarter-finals continue at the All England Club tomorrow.

Rybakina defeated Jabeur in three sets to win her first grand-slam title last July but the Tunisian is out for “revenge” after looking impressive in her straight-sets win against Petra Kvitova.

The men’s action is highlighted by Carlos Alcaraz facing young rival Holger Rune in the first Wimbledon quarter-final in the Open era to be played between two players under the age of 21.

Christopher Eubanks will look to pull off another upset as the unseeded American faces Daniil Medvedev, following shock wins against Cameron Norrie and Stefanos Tsitsipas so far.

Meanwhile, Aryna Sabalenka will look to return to the Wimbledon semi-finals as the second seed faces in-form Madison Keys. The Belarusian reached the final four in 2021 before she was banned from competing at the Championships last year.

Novak Djokovic on being the one everybody wants to beat:

“I love it! It’s true. I think any tennis player wants to be in a position where everyone wants to win against you on the court. It is a privilege, as Billie Jean King said.

“Pressure is a part of what we do. It’s a part of our sport. It’s never going to go away regardless of how many Grand Slams you win, or how many matches you’ve won or how many years you’ve played professionally on the tour.

“The pressure is paramount every single time I come out on court, particularly here on Centre Court at Wimbledon but at the same time, it awakens the most beautiful emotions in me and it motivates me beyond what I’ve ever dreamed of actually and inspires me to play my best tennis.

“I know that they want to get a scalp and they want to win but it ain’t happening still! Very humble!”

Things will get really difficult is Djokovic holds the next game though.

In the next rally Rublev manages to get out of trouble to set up a forehand switch but it lands wide and leaves Djokovic with two break points.

The first one is saved thanks to a couple of overhead smashes but Rublev goes long with a backhand and Djokovic takes the break of serve.

Game and set Novak Djokovic.

He’s made to work for it by Rublev who showcases some of his best shots trying to keep Djokovic at bay.

The Russian takes the Serb to deuce after Djokovic wastes a couple of set point opportunities. Djokovic then pings a backhand over the back and needs to save a break point. When needed he turns up with the serve and volley winner.

Rublev wins another rally with some superb play from the net. Two volleys, one a stretching backhand winner, take him to advantage but Djokovic holds his nerve in the next rally.

The Serb is gifted a set point as Rublev misses a return but Djokovic pings a forehand into the net to take the game to a fifth deuce.

Finally! After a game that lasts nearly quarter of an hour, one which saw Djokovic save three break points, he gets over the line and takes the second set.

Each Novak Djokovic service game is a crucial one for Andrey Rublev. He’s a break down and needs to win one of the next two games against the serve.

He starts well in this one as Djokovic goes long from a forehand. The defending champion fights back though and focuses on staying in the next two rallies. He draws the mistakes from Rublev before moving up to 40-15 with an unreturnable serve.

A wide serve to the forehand sends the game Djokovic’s way as Rublev pings his return into the net.

It must be so disheartening for Djokovic’s opponents when they hit a great serve at him and his return is even better. Rublev is learning that to beat Djokovic with the serve he either has to be ultra-accurate or frighteningly quick.

One of Djokovic’s trademark slides on the grass brings him another break point after a cross court forehand beats Rublev and lands in play.

Deuce! Rublev plays a brilliant rally, he somehow wrestles the momentum away from Djokovic, thanks to a pacey forehand, then drills a backhand winner down the line to save break point.

From here, the Russian sails through the rest of the game and gets the crowd cheering in delight. He holds serve.

Djokovic looks to complete his break with a wide serve out to Rublev’s forehand. The Russian gets to the ball but hooks it well out of play.

In the next rally, Djokovic controls the tempo and switchs Rublev from his backhand to his forehand and back again. The last backhand stroke is pumped too long. 30-0.

Rublev gets back into the gamethough with a backhand slice that sets him up for an overhead smash. That hard work feels for nought when he sends a makeable passing winner wide of the lines to give the point to his opponent.

Djokovic can’t get over the line on his first attempts and nails a cross court forehand from the baseline into the net. With another opportunity before deuce, Djokovic peppers the Rublev forehand and is rewarded with an error from the Russian.

The reigning champions lead by two now.

Rublev takes the first point of the next game then engages Djokovic in a brilliant rally. The two switch from forehand attacks to backhand defence before Djokovic gets an inside out forehand to the opposite side of the Russian. Rublev has to change direction quickly but manages to reach the ball with a desperate backhand. The ball loops into the air and drops on the wrong side of the net.

Djokovic has seen the better of the longer rallies but every now and again the Serb makes a mistake and gives away the point. At 30-30, he instead decides to come up to the net with Rublev stuck on the baseline. The Russian goes for a lob but knocks it too long.

Djokovic has a break point and takes it with an insanely good strike from Rublev’s first serve. He’s in control of the third set now.

That’s impressive from Andrey Rublev. He’s taking his time in the longer rallies and is waiting for his moment to strike. Rublev works Djokovic from left-to-right and despite the 36-year-old getting to the ball he whips a return out of play.

Rublev then flies through the rest of the game and holds to love to regain the lead.

Andrey Rublev needed to win that game. He was trounced in the second set and to get on the board early in the third brings him right back into the match.

Even better than a hold of serve though is a break. Rublev takes the attack to Djokovic and somewhat catches the Serb by surprise. A flurry of forehand returns helps Rublev to 15-40 but Djokovic saves both break points with a couple of beltin’ first serves.

Another one down the T sees Rublev smoke his return over the back and after the Russian is wide in the next rally, Djokovic has his hold of serve.

Into the third set then and Andrey Rublev needs to reset. He goes wide to Novak Djokovic’s forehand with the first serve and wins the point when the Serb goes long on the return.

The next rally is a good one but Djokovic hustles across the court and smokes a backhand across court to draw level.

Another mistake from the Serb puts Rublev ahead and he pings down an ace to hammer home his advantage. At 40-15, Rublev scuffs one over the back of court and increases the pressure on himself to close out this game.

It doesn’t show though as he serves out the next point.

Andrey Rublev 6-4 1-6 Novak Djokovic

Tuesday 11 July 2023 18:13 , Mike Jones

Novak Djokovic’s favourite shot is that backhand down the line. He earns himself another winner with a powerful return that Andrey Rublev can’t get near.

The two men then trade blows in the next rallies, each picks up a point before Djokovic earns a set point with a banging ace down the T line.

Rublev makes him work to get over the line, he gets back and forehand from the right side of court and Djokovic pumps his response wide of the line. The Wimbledon champion then goes long and has to get through deuce to clinch the set.

Rublev and Djokovic try to out power each other from the baseline. Djokovic is the more accurate of the pair and wins with an inside out forehand that wrongfoots the Russian.

The Serb takes the set with an ace. This quarter-final is all square.

Novak Djokovic breaks him to love and is well on course to levelling up this match.

*Rublev 6-4 0-3 Djokovic - Djokovic saves two break points to hold

Tuesday 11 July 2023 18:01 , Ben Fleming

Flukey! Rublev’s return flies off an unintended part of his racquet but sails past the onrushing Djokovic who can do nothing about it. He moves to 15-30 but Djokovic lets out a roar as Rublev nets to get it back to 30-30.

Shot! It’s another passing shot in the exact same manner as early in the game but this one Rublev definitely meant. It’s a break point for Rublev straight away which is saved by Djokovic...but he nets straight after to gift the Russian another chance!

It’s a poor unforced error from Rublev, though, as he fires long with the backhand and the chance goes. His face says it all, that was a real missed opportunity as Djokovic eventually holds to consolidate his earlier break. How important could that be?

Rublev 6-4 0-2 Djokovic* - Early break for Djokovic

Tuesday 11 July 2023 17:55 , Ben Fleming

The world number two moves into a 0-30 lead but there’s the first signs of frustration as his return sails long.

Double fault! Oh, dear - that’s not what Rublev would have wanted in the slightest and he has to defend two break points...the first one is dealt with convincingly but the Serb prevails at the second time of asking!

He’s worked around the court but the defending champion eventually pins the Russian to the back of the court before catching him out with a dropped shot which Rublev can’t return inside the lines.

An early break in the second set for Novak.

*Rublev 6-4 0-1 Djokovic

Tuesday 11 July 2023 17:50 , Ben Fleming

A service game to love for Novak as he looks to put that first set behind him straight away. He’ll keep coming at Rublev but the Russian has shown he can handle plenty of it so far.

Rublev 6-4 Djokovic - Rublev takes first set

Tuesday 11 July 2023 17:47 , Ben Fleming

Well, we have a game on our hands now! It’s nervy at 30-30 but Rublev holds his nerve to serve out for the first set! The perfect start for the Russian who had to battle at points to hold serve but took the one opportunity that was presented to him and has snatched the first set from right under Djokovic’s nose.

*Rublev 5-4 Djokovic - Rublev breaks

Tuesday 11 July 2023 17:41 , Ben Fleming

A missed drop shot for Djokovic gives Rublev a slight opening at 15-30 but Djokovic fires down a nerveless 109mph second serve which Rublev can’t retrieve. The Russian challenges but it’s in and we’re back to 30-30.

Into deuce now and Djokovic slips. There’s a rare sighting of a break point on the Djokovic serve....taken! That is wonderful tennis from Rublev and he now serves for the first set.

Rublev 4-4 Djokovic* - Rublev hanging in with another hold

Tuesday 11 July 2023 17:35 , Ben Fleming

Well, that is one way to respond. It was an almighty tussle to hold serve last time but another example of Rublev’s powerful forehand capabilities are on display as he holds serve, dropping just one point this time.

*Rublev 3-4 Djokovic - Djokovic holds again

Tuesday 11 July 2023 17:33 , Ben Fleming

Rublev must feel like he’s on the back foot constantly at the minute as Djokovic holds to love to put the Russian back on serve again.

Rublev 3-3 Djokovic* - Rublev holds

Tuesday 11 July 2023 17:29 , Ben Fleming

The Russian lets out an almighty roar as he cannons another forehand into the corner of the court. Three break points saved and Rublev holds.

*Rublev 2-3 Djokovic - Rublev saves three break points

Tuesday 11 July 2023 17:27 , Ben Fleming

Pressure on Rublev, now. A couple of well-crafted points from Djokovic gets him a 0-30 lead early in the Russians service game. Rublev gets one back with a strong serve but is wrong-footed the next time and the world number two is greeted with two break points.

Two good serves and two break points saved - very solid from Rublev...or is it? He gifts Novak another opportunity with a tame forehand that goes straight into the net.

Denied again, though - another good serve and forehand combination from the big-hitting Russian.

What a point! Rublev should have won that on numerous occasions but Djokovic stays in it somehow before Rublev fires long. Back to deuce after 20 absorbing shots.

*Rublev 2-3 Djokovic

Tuesday 11 July 2023 17:22 , Ben Fleming

It’s going to be a tricky task for Rublev to break the Djokovic serve based on this early going. The Serb holds with relative ease again for the third time in a row.

Rublev 2-2 Djokovic* - Rublev levels

Tuesday 11 July 2023 17:17 , Ben Fleming

Rublev will push Djokovic all the way today and the Serb finds that out first hand as he comes to the net but is passed with a vicious forehand from his opponent. The forehand is the Russian’s great strength and what he will be relying on if he’s to pull off an almighty upset.

It’s working thus far as he levels the first set up at 2-2.

*Rublev 1-2 Djokovic - Djokovic holds serve

Tuesday 11 July 2023 17:14 , Ben Fleming

A double fault from Novak is the only point that the defending champion gives away on serve as he holds with ease again.

Rublev 1-1 Djokovic* - Rublev holds

Tuesday 11 July 2023 17:09 , Ben Fleming

Early evidence of Djokovic’s supreme ability when it comes to returning serves as he goes from in to out with a delightful forehand away from the stretching Rublev.

But the Russian is not going to give over easily as he fights back well before firing down a 125mph ace to bring up a game point. Another big serve and Djokovic returns long. Good hold.

*Rublev 0-1 Djokovic - Djokovic holds serve

Tuesday 11 July 2023 17:06 , Ben Fleming

A couple of pinpoint serves if followed by a lengthy battle of the groundstrokes as these two size each other up. Not to much bother for Djokovic, though, as he holds serve to start the match.

As she said after the match, I’m not sure many people expected Elina Svitolina to be in the final four of a Grand Slam just six months on from giving birth. The Ukrainian reached this stage before at Wimbledon, in 2019, when she lost to eventual champion Simona Halep.

This time, the 28-year-old will take on World No. 42, Marketa Vondrousova, after the Czech produced an upset of her own, knocking out number four seed, Jessica Pegula, in three sets.

GAME, SET, MATCH! Swiatek 5-7 7-6 2-6 Svitolina

Tuesday 11 July 2023 16:35 , Ben Fleming

The first chance goes begging with a double fault but Swiatek finds the net with the next point and that is that - Svitolina has done it! The Ukrainian knocks out the number one seed 5-7 7-6 2-6 and the centre-court crowd rises to cheer the wildcard on.

There’s an embrace from the two players at the net before Svitolina soaks in the applause from this crowd. It was a marvellous display of ball-striking from the Ukrainian who had to battle but ultimately she held her nerve in the key spots and secured a well-deserved victory.

Swiatek 5-7 7-6 2-5 Svitolina* - Svitolina serving for the match

Tuesday 11 July 2023 16:27 , Ben Fleming

Some powerful serves of her own in response from Swiatek but Svitolina is not letting Swiatek have anything easy as she launches a superb backhand down the line at full stretch.

Swiatek holds on to get just her second game of this set on the board. She’ll need something heroic from here, though. She’s a double break down and Svitolina is now serving for the match.

*Swiatek 5-7 7-6 1-5 Svitolina - Svitolina one game away

Tuesday 11 July 2023 16:24 , Ben Fleming

If there’s been one chink in Svitolina’s armour today it’s come in the form of her drop shots. Another one nestles in the net but the Ukrainian follows it up with a feisty couple of serves to move back ahead at 30-15.

Oh, and it gets even better! Swiatek can’t get near her next two serves. Two aces, 5-1 up and one game off the semi-finals now.

Swiatek 5-7 7-6 1-4 Svitolina* - Double break for Svitolina

Tuesday 11 July 2023 16:20 , Ben Fleming

Some more magical hitting from Svitolina as she sends Swiatek the wrong way, whipping a forehand into the corner and taking a 15-30 lead in this game.

And now another two break points! At full-stretch the Ukrainian fires a bullet of a backhand down the line from off the court and Swiatek can only net in response.

Can she convert? The first chance goes begging but Swiatek nets again at 30-40 and the Ukrainian has the double break! Four games in a row in this deciding set and she’s now just two games away from a place in the semi-finals.

*Swiatek 5-7 7-6 1-3 Svitolina - Massive hold from Svitolina

Tuesday 11 July 2023 16:16 , Ben Fleming

Well, it looked comfortable at 40-0 to Svitolina but, within a blink of an eye, she finds herself back at deuce. What a shot! Swiatek’s shot flicks the net as Svitolina is approaching but she shows great improvisation to dig the ball out, send Swiatek wide, before slamming home a forehand volley into the other corner.

Advantage and she converts! A big hold for Svitolina who leads 3-1 now.

*Jannik Sinner 2-3 Roman Safiullin

Tuesday 11 July 2023 16:13 , Alex Pattle

Over on No 1 Court, eighth men’s seed Jannik Sinner wastes an early chance to break serve against Roman Safiullin.

Russia’s Safiullin, a real underdog here, manages to hold for a 3-2 lead in the first set of that quarter-final.

Swiatek 5-7 7-6 1-2 Svitolina* - Svitolina breaks serve

Tuesday 11 July 2023 16:09 , Ben Fleming

Now it’s Svitolina taking advantage of the second serve with two crunching returns which fly past the helpless Swiatek.

0-30 up is the Ukrainian and she has two break points now at 15-40 as Swiatek fires wide with her forehand...saved by Swiatek! Some nerveless hitting from the number one seed who digs in to deny the Ukrainian both opportunities.

Back to deuce but another wild forehand gives Svitolina her third break-point opportunity of this game...and this time she has it! It’s long again from Swiatek - this time with the backhand - and Svitolina strikes first in this deciding third set.

Ons Jabeur vows to keep calm as she faces Wimbledon rematch with Elena Rybakina

Tuesday 11 July 2023 16:09 , Alex Pattle

Speaking ahead of her quarter-final with Elena Rybakina – a rematch of last year’s final – Ons Jabeur said: “My priority is really to stick 100 per cent to the plan that my coach will give me, and try to even do things that I might not like on the court, play more freely, just think about each point and not the results.

“I think you have a plan tactically, mentally also. Sometimes playing someone like Elena, who serves really well, it can be frustrating. Me, I would get angry, but I’ll try to accept the fact that she serves so good and try to return good and see what I can do there.”

When it’s good, it’s so good from Swiatek as she fires into the corners with another pinpoint forehand. There have been too many errors mixed in but there’s not one this time as another sweeping forehand moves into the lead at 6-5 in this tie-break.

Set point for Swiatek...and it’s long from Svitolina! She was 4-1 up at one point but it’s the Ukrainian who falters on this occasion and the number one seed lets out a roar as she gets herself firmly back into his encounter.

Tuesday 11 July 2023 15:36 , Ben Fleming

A 93mph winner from Swiatek is met by Svitolina’s first ace of the match to start this game as both women trade big shots.

Svitolina’s second serve comes under pressure now, though, and Swiatek takes full advantage to find another winner and 30-30. But it’s a poor mistake that follows from the Pole and Svitolina has a game point...and what a shot! It’s another tame second serve that has her in trouble but, at full stretch, it’s a simply marvellous passing shot with her backhand to win the game.

6-5 up she moves and Swiatek has to serve out to stay in this match once again

Swiatek 5-7 4-4 Svitolina* - Swiatek holds serve

Tuesday 11 July 2023 15:23 , Ben Fleming

Swiatek doesn’t look as nervy as she did in the first set when it all fell apart for her but Svitolina has not let her settle one bit during these last few games and continues to put her foot down with a series of powerful forehands.

But credit to Swiatek, she maintains her composure, working Svitolina around the court at 40-30 before delivering a perfect cross-court forehand to tie us up in this second set.

*Swiatek 5-7 3-2 Svitolina - Svitolina holds serve

Tuesday 11 July 2023 15:12 , Ben Fleming

A solid response from the Ukrainian who answers back to bring this second set to a crucial point at 3-2. Swiatek has the break but she’ll no doubt have what happened last set in the back of her mind.

Tuesday 11 July 2023 15:08 , Ben Fleming

*Swiatek 5-7 2-1 Svitolina - Swiatek breaks

Tuesday 11 July 2023 15:04 , Ben Fleming

At 40-0, Svitolina is comfortable but tries to get too cute with a regulation drop shot which just catches the net. Before she knows it, another two points fall Swiatek’s way and we’re into deuce.

A double fault sees the Ukrainian miss the opportunity to close out the game at the first advantage and now she has to defend a break point after Swiatek latches onto Svitolina’s reply down the middle before crunching it into the corner with her forehand.

And the Pole takes advantage! A huge break from Swiatek and how much could Svitolina come to rue that missed drop shot at 40-0?

Swiatek 5-7 1-1 Svitolina* - Swiatek holds

Tuesday 11 July 2023 14:58 , Ben Fleming

Swiatek needs to respond.

Swiatek 5-7 Svitolina - Roof to close

Tuesday 11 July 2023 14:48 , Ben Fleming

Swiatek continues to jot down notes into her book as we wait for the roof to close. Whatever it is, her team will hope it will help her put behind her that disastrous last 15 minutes which saw her lose four games on the trot and the first set.

*Swiatek 5-6 Svitolina - Pressure on Iga

Tuesday 11 July 2023 14:31 , Ben Fleming

This set has really gotten away from Swiatek in a short space of time.

Tuesday 11 July 2023 14:09 , Ben Fleming

The first sign of real power from Svitolina as she opens up her body and lets loose on a crunching forehand into the far corner.

It’s the only point she wins in that game, however, as she nets to give Swiatek a rather easy hold of serve to take a 4-2 lead.

*Swiatek 3-2 Svitolina - Swiatek breaks straight back

Tuesday 11 July 2023 14:04 , Ben Fleming

Swiatek is certainly winning the power battle in these early exchanges. What’s also noticeable is the angles the Pole is getting on her shots, often sending Svitolina to the far corners of this court.

The Ukrainian is battling away nicely, however, and brings up a game point at 40-30 but another spearing backhand down the line gets us to deuce once again in this match.

And now we have another break point, this time for Swiatek who has a chance to re-establish her earlier break. It’s wide with the forehand from Svitolina and the World No.1 breaks back straight away.

*Pegula 4-6 3-1 Vondrousova - No 1 Court

Tuesday 11 July 2023 14:04 , Alex Pattle

Pegula goes 40-0 up on her serve, but the game ends up being trickier than it needs to be, with Vondrousova getting to 40-30 before her American opponent ultimately holds.

Now Pegula is 0-40 up on the Czech’s serve! Can she get the break this time? The first break point goes begging... and another, as Vondrousova narrows the gap as she did in the last game...

THERE is the break, though! Pegula leads 3-1 in the second set! The fourth seed will now serve to extend that lead even further.

Swiatek 2-2 Svitolina* - Svitolina breaks back

Tuesday 11 July 2023 13:59 , Ben Fleming

Swiatek continues to showcase her power in the early goings but there is a small window of opportunity as Svitolina gets it to 15-30...but what a response from Swiatek! She stoops low and carves out a magical cross-court forehand before somehow reaching a volley at the net to bring up a game point after back-to-back points.

Another ball finds the net for Swiatek, though, and we’re into our second deuce of the match so far.

Svitolina almost brings up a break point as the line judge calls Swiatek’s forehand volley long. It’s challenged and the ball was in so the point is replayed. It’s the same outcome though and Svitolina wins herself her first break point opportunity...and Swiatek nets!

Svitolina breaks back and we’re level again.

*Swiatek 2-1 Svitolina

Tuesday 11 July 2023 13:51 , Ben Fleming

That’s better from Svitolina and hopefully a settler for the Ukrainian on centre court. A more confident service game means she has something on the board and pulls it back to 2-1. That’s greeted by huge applause from those in centre court. You’d say it’s pretty clear who most of them are cheering on today

Pegula 4-6 1-0 Vondrousova* - No 1 Court
