Willow Star Warwick Davis: Disney+ Cancellation/Removal of Fantasy Series Is ‘Embarrassing’

Willow star Warwick Davis is still mourning the cancellation and removal of his 2022 fantasy/adventure series from the Disney+ platform.

In a recent post on X (fka Twitter), Davis wrote: “I meet lovely people on a daily basis who are fans of #Willow, who are the reason the @DisneyPlus series was made. Please tell me @WaltDisneyCo, what do I say to these subscribers when they ask why they can’t watch the series any more? #embarrassing”

Disney removed the original series from its streaming service in May, just months after the show began airing, leaving the TV sequel of the 1988 film in limbo and a number of Willow fans confused. (The eight-episode first season premiered Nov. 30, 2022 and wrapped on Jan. 11, 2023.)

Warwick isn’t the only one to comment on the series’ disappearance. Willow creator Jon Kasdan commented a week after the show’s removal that it reminded him of when Disney movies were hard to find during his childhood.

“I’ve been quiet on this news that #Willow is leaving @DisneyPlus ’cause… I’m kinda into it,” he posted on his X account in May, which has since been shut down. “I grew up at a time when @Disney movies were periodically re-released and not available to own, and it made them… more special. I worry about many things but NONE of them are that #Willow will never be available again, either on @DisneyPlus or perhaps… someplace else, & ya never know where that could lead… stranger things have happened. So grateful for all the love and enthusiasm; it’s truly what keeps these worlds alive.”

Willow takes place 20 years after Willow Ufgood (played again by Davis) and Sorsha (Joanne Whalley) defeated Queen Bavmorda (Jean Marsh) and saved the realm from darkness in the fantasy drama. When the series picks up, a new evil threatens to overtake their world, prompting Sorsha’s daughter Kit (played by Ruby Cruz) and a ragtag group of young heroes strike out to find Willow, whom they believe to be their greatest hope.

The series also starred new cast members Ellie Bamber, Erin Kellyman, Tony Revolori, Amar Chadha-Patel and Dempsey Bryk.
