Willingboro township, council silent on federal charges against Deputy Mayor Anderson

WILLINGBORO TWP. — Weather allowing, Township Council will meet Friday evening in the first session since federal officials disclosed Deputy Mayor Nathaniel Anderson is a co-defendant in an alleged mortgage fraud scheme.

Anderson, 56, of Country Club Road, has not responded to calls or emails to township and personal accounts following his initial appearance in federal court on Wednesday.

It’s not known if Anderson’s case will be discussed at the meeting or if council will take any action related to it.

On Thursday, fellow council members Samantha Whitfield and Tiffani Worthy declined to comment on Anderson.

Mayor Kaya McIntosh and Councilwoman Rebecca Perrone have not responded to requests for comment.

“The township will not be making comment on that matter, as it’s a personal matter related to Mr. Anderson himself,” Deputy Township Manager Gary B. Lawery III said Thursday.

Friday's meeting is rescheduled from Tuesday, when it was cancelled due to snow. Heavy snow on Friday could delay it again, Lawery said.

Anderson first was elected to the five-member, all-Democrat council in 2009. He was re-elected in 2013, 2017, and 2021. He is a past township mayor.

He is a native of Teaneck who moved to Willingboro in 2001 with his family, according to his official biography.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office said Wednesday that Anderson and another man had been charged with staging a fake short sale of his home to avoid foreclosure and save more than $120,000 in mortgage debt.

The charges are only allegations; Anderson has not been convicted of any crimes related to the case.
