His wife was tired of driving all the way east for boba, so he opened a west-side shop

Wichita’s boba scene just keeps growing, and as of this week, there’s yet another new player on the scene.

On Monday, Bao Nguyen officially opened Boss Tea in the former Weirdough Bakery space at 7130 W. Maple — in the same strip center that has Chipotle, Soujourner’s Coffee House and McAlister’s Deli. He’ll celebrate the shop’s grand opening on Saturday, when all drinks will be discounted by 30% from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

The shop is a franchise of the Boss Tea chain that was started in Tulsa in 2019 and now also has shops in Washington, Texas and Colorado. Wichita franchisee Bao, who works full time as an engineer at Spirit AeroSystems, decided to open the shop because his wife loves boba and the west side of Wichita was lacking in options, forcing her to drive out east for a fix.

Boss Tea’s large menu includes lots of milk tea options in flavors like coconut, winter melon, peppermint, honeydew, taro and more. It also offers fruit-flavored and brown sugar lattes, Vietnamese coffee drinks, fruit teas, topical teas and more. Customers can choose from toppings like cheese foam, herbal jelly, coconut jelly, aloe vera and Oreo crumbles, and they also can customize the sugar level and ice level in their drinks. (Check out the full menu below.)

The website for Boss Tea lists its top 12 drinks, and the No. 1 option is the black milk tea followed by the brown sugar latte, the Taiwanese milk tea and the taro milk tea, which is a lovely shade of lavender. Other drinks that made the chart are a colorful Pink Butterfly, which tastes like strawberry lemonade and is topped with flower tea, and a tiramisu coffee late, which is a Vietnamese coffee topped with tiramisu foam.

The hours for Boss Tea are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays and noon to 7 p.m. Sundays.
