What to do in Wichita this weekend: Have a laugh, see a parade, get in the holiday spirit

Halloween is over, and the holiday season has officially started in Wichita. The first of many holiday events planned for the year get going this weekend, but the calendar also includes a show by author and humorist David Sedaris, a play, concerts and more.

Here’s a look at some of the fun activities happening in Wichita during the first weekend in November.

David Sedaris at The Orpheum

8 p.m. Saturday, Orpheum Theatre, 200 N. Broadway

Author and humorist David Sedaris, who has appeared in Wichita many times over the years, will appear on Saturday at the Orpheum Theatre, 200 N. Broadway. Sedaris, known for books such as “Me Talk Pretty One Day,” “Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim,” and his most recent book, “Happy Go Lucky,” will appear at 8 p.m. and also be selling books. Veterans Day Parade

11 a.m. Saturday, Main and Central

Veterans Day is on Nov. 11, but a parade honoring veterans is scheduled for this weekend. It’ll start at 11 a.m. on Saturday at Main and Central in downtown Wichita. Post-parade activities at the Wichita WaterWalk will include food trucks, a car show, static displays of military equipment, information on support for veterans and a trophy presentation for the top three parade entries. The theme of this year’s parade is “Honoring Women Veterans.” Admission to the parade, which is sponsored by Spirit Aerosystems, is free. ‘We Own This Now’ play

3 p.m. Saturday, Hope Mennonite Church, 868 N. Maize Road

“We Own This Now,” a traveling play by Alison Casella Brookins that is set in Kansas and deals with themes of love of land and loss of land, will arrive in Wichita for a performance at 3 p.m. Saturday at Hope Mennonite Church in Wichita. The play, which stars Ted Swartz and Michelle Milne, has already been performed in Lawrence, Hillsboro and McPherson. Tickets for the play, which is being put on as a benefit for Kanza Heritage Society, are $20 and available at first-church-of-the-brethren.square.site or at the door.

‘4 Things with Amy Brown’

7:30 p.m. Saturday, Mary Jane Teall Theater, Century II, 225 W. Douglas

Amy Brown, the co-host of radio’s The Bobby Bones Show, will be in Wichita on Saturday for her show called “4 Things with Amy Brown Live.” The show will feature Brown talking about the things she does to maintain healthy well-being and a positive attitude. It starts at 7:30 p.m. at the Mary Jane Teall Theater inside Century II, and tickets are $29-$99 at selectaseat.com, by calling 316-755-SEAT or in person at the Intrust Bank Arena box office.

Wichita Toy Run

9 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday, starts at Douglas and McLean and travels to Hartman Arena

Bikers: The 43rd annual Wichita Toy Run is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday and will feature a long line of motorcycles traveling from Douglas and McLean to Hartman Arena. Cyclists who want to participate can line up starting at 9 a.m. at Douglas and McLean. The convoy of bikes will take off at 1 p.m. and travel to the arena in Park City, where there will be a $5 chili feed that includes prizes and vendors. The Wichita Toy Run Association is asking for donations of new or unwrapped toys or cash and would like a variety of items for kids all the way up to age 14.

‘Circle Musica: Holiday Wonderland’

7 p.m. Thursday, Orpheum Theatre, 200 N. Broadway

The holiday season is underway, and The Orpheum will be the site of a holiday-themed show called “Cirque Musica: Holiday Wonderland.” The show, which is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Thursday, will feature acrobats and aerialists performing to holiday music. Tickets are $39-$89 and are available at selectaseat.com, by calling 316-755-SEAT or in person at the Intrust Bank Arena box office.
