Wichita high school basketball scores: Garden Plain boys stun Class 2A’s No. 1 team
As the losses piled up, sometimes in excruciating fashion, Garden Plain high school boys basketball coach Mark Powell preached resilience to his team.
That can be a difficult message to resonate with a young group of mostly sophomores, but Powell, in his first year coaching in Garden Plain, was impressed how the players responded in practice after a tough game.
The pay-off came on Tuesday night when the Owls, in the midst of a losing season, stunned the No. 1-ranked team in Class 2A with a 53-47 win over Independent on their home court.
Garden Plain (4-12) won just its second game since Dec. 16, while Independent (14-2) lost for the first time to a KSHSAA opponent.
“Losing can be demoralizing, but what I’ve always liked about this bunch is their perseverance,” Powell said. “I kept telling them, ‘When you continue to fight, you’re always going to have a chance when you haven’t given up.’ We’ve done a good job persevering through some tough losses and I’ve been telling the guys all season that our ceiling is pretty high. Hopefully (Tuesday) was a good indicator of that.”
What made Tuesday’s win even more impressive is that Garden Plain was coming off perhaps its most crushing loss when it squandered a 5-point lead in the final 90 seconds of regulation and eventually lost in overtime to Conway Springs this past Friday.
The youth of the Owls’ has played a role in their struggles with turnovers, which has cost them in three games they lost by a single basket in the past month.
“On Friday we lost and not in good fashion and we didn’t say a lot in the locker room,” Powell said. “I just said, ‘This bad taste has got to sting.’”
Garden Plain delivered its most inspired play of the season against Independent, which has had breakthrough success in the first year under coach Tyler Keim playing an up-tempo style.
It was a wire-to-wire win for the Owls, which led 10-2 early and took a 28-16 lead into halftime. Even though the usual amount of shots weren’t falling, Independent still managed to make one last run at the lead. A three-point play by Bryce Casanova trimmed Garden Plain’s lead to 46-42 with 2:54 remaining and Independent had four shots in the paint that would have further cut into the lead, but all missed.
After struggling to protect fourth-quarter leads, usually because of turnovers, the Owls kept their cool better than they have all season. Powell hopes it’s a growth moment for the team.
“I keep talking about our ceiling and don’t let people tell you otherwise just because you’re sophomores,” Powell said. “We have a high ceiling this year and we showed that (Tuesday). Independent is in our sub-state and we just showed we can play really well against the No. 1-ranked team in the state.”
Garden Plain’s sophomores were at their best against Independent, led by a double-double performance from Kaeden Kasselman (game-high 17 points, 10 rebounds). The Owls also received 13 points and five assists from Seth Dugan, while Cooper Scheer chipped in 11 points. Senior Collin Haukap added four points and three assists.
“It was nice for us to finally put together a full game,” Powell said. “We weathered the storm there in the fourth quarter, which was nice because we haven’t always done that very well. It was nice to finally end a game.”
Independent was led by three double-digit scorers in Conar Harris (12), Isaac Combs (12) and Joseph Recalde-Phillips (11).
