Why Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce Skipped the 2024 Met Gala Despite Being Invited

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce were not among the stars at the 2024 Met Gala tonight. Multiple sources told TMZ that the couple had been individually invited to the famed fashion event, but each declined to go.

Page Six initially sparked some hope on April 29 that Swift could attend, but People and Entertainment Tonight dispelled the rumor quickly, reporting that Swift wouldn’t be able to make room in her schedule.

You can blame the Tortured Poets Department singer’s absence on work, or so TMZ, People, and Entertainment Tonight all made clear. Swift resumes her Eras Tour on May 9 in Paris; the Met Gala took place only days before, on May 6 in New York. People reported that Swift would indeed be “focusing on rehearsals and tour prep” Monday evening.

Still, it’s not as if Kelce and Swift have hidden their relationship at other events. They’ve been photographed together numerous times, including at the Super Bowl and Coachella. However, there’s one key exception to this trend: They have yet to make their red carpet debut as a couple. The Met Gala could have given them that milestone, but—hey, duty calls.

Meanwhile, Swift’s new album, The Tortured Poets Department, features a handful of songs fans believe to be about Kelce. A source told Entertainment Tonight on April 19 that Kelce has been doing his best to support his girlfriend’s big career moment.

“He knows how much this means to her and thinks she’s extremely talented,” the source said. “Taylor and Travis admire each other’s creative processes and work ethic. They cheer each other on, respect each other’s opinions, and are open and communicative.”

This source added that Swift “is so excited” about the release.

“She has put her heart and soul into the music, just like with everything she does, and can’t wait for her fans to listen to it and to share it with them,” they continued.
