Hmm, Why Is There a TARDIS on the Young Sheldon Set Right Now…?
CBS’ Young Sheldon will get a bit timey-wimey during its farewell season!
During a Television Critics Association winter press tour visit to the Warner Bros. TV hitcom’s set on Tuesday, a facsimile of Doctor Who‘s iconic TARDIS (Time And Relative Dimension in Space) was spotted on a dolly.
Most understandably, the sight of the blue police box fueled one of the very first questions of the panel Q&A, which featured cast members Iain Armitage, Zoe Perry, Lance Barber, Annie Potts, Raegan Revord, Montana Jordan and Emily Osment, plus executive producers Steven Molaro, Steve Holland and Chuck Lorre.
The EPs were mum on how exactly the TARDIS fits into the final season, though Holland shared, “We do have a reference to Sylvester McCoy’s Doctor,” the seventh, who was featured on the BBC sci-fi series from 1987 to 1989 (as well as in a 1993 charity special and a 1996 TV-movie). Young Sheldon‘s timeline is currently hovering around the summer of 1993.
“We don’t have any other Doctor Who guest stars, but we do have the TARDIS,” Holland added, “and that’s really the star of the show”
Holland later confirmed for TVLine that the TARDIS guest-stars in the seventh of the final season’s episodes. (Meaning, the seventh Doctor is name-checked in the seventh episode of the seventh season!)
Young Sheldon is in the middle of production on Episode 8 this week.
The TARDIS is no stranger to the larger, hot, dense Big Bang Theory universe, of course. Most notably, in the original series’ Season 8 episode “The Skywalker Incursion,” Bernadette and Howard had a dispute over whether to sell off at a garage sale the TARDIS Howard bought long ago, or move it into their new home. Ultimately, a heated game of doubles ping-pong settled the matter, with Howard’s partner Amy throwing the game so that she could install the TARDIS door at the entrance to her bedroom, to (hopefully) entice Sheldon.
CBS’ Young Sheldon kicks off its farewell run this Thursday at 8/7c, where it will again lead into Ghosts and So Help Me Todd.
