Why Southern Miss baseball is wearing Camp Shelby jerseys on Sunday vs ULM

HATTIESBURG — Southern Miss baseball will be wearing a newly unveiled jersey on Sunday against ULM that pays tribute to Camp Shelby, a local military base in Hattiesburg.

It's part of Southern Miss' military appreciation weekend. Active and retired military members can also redeem free tickets to the game on Sunday (1 p.m., ESPN+) at Pete Taylor Park and immediate family members can receive a discounted rate.

The Golden Eagles revealed on social media the gray jerseys on Thursday with players Billy Oldham, Carson Paetow, Slade Wilks and Billy Butler wearing them in front of a tank.

Camp Shelby opened in 1917 and is located 12 miles south of the Southern Miss campus.

Eight former professional players — George Archie, Zeke Bonura, Al Brazle, David "Boo" Ferriss, Al Flair, Ken Heintzelman, George Scharein and Harry Walker — were at some point stationed at Camp Shelby, according to Southern Miss.

The Golden Eagles (23-14, 9-6 Sun Belt Conference) open the three-game series against ULM (17-19, 5-10) on Friday.
