Why Sofia Richie Grainge Skipped the 2024 Met Gala
Sofia Richie Grainge is close to welcoming her first child, so the star unsurprisingly chose to sit this year’s Met Gala out.
Richie Grainge has attended the Met Gala three times before, making her last appearance in 2017. That year, she wore a metallic floor-length gown with a deep plunge neckline by Topshop. She told Teen Vogue then that the Met Gala red carpet is a very “stressful five minutes. [I] do it quick and get the carpet done.”
Richie Grainge has shied away from events for the last couple of weeks as she nears her due date. She was last photographed shopping for baby clothes on April 10. Last week, she posted a mirror selfie, showing off her pregnant figure.

Richie Grainge’s father Lionel spoke to Vanity Fair last week about how his daughter was doing during the last weeks of her pregnancy.
“I’m excited,” he said. “We’re just waiting now! But I love the fact that she’s getting antsy and bored.”
He added that seeing his youngest child have a child also hits different for him, despite him becoming a grandfather for the first time back in 2008. “I can’t take it. I just can’t take it,” he said with a laugh. “As I told the kids, it’s one thing when the kids have babies—that’s great! But now the baby is having a baby. I mean, this is the youngest, and it’s fantastic.”
Richie Grainge announced her pregnancy on Jan. 25, 2024. She revealed she is having a girl who will be a Gemini, making her due date between May 21 and June 20.
“She’s growing pretty fast, so [the due date] is a bit up in the air,” Richie Grainge told Vogue. “I love the YouTubes and the TikToks—even before I was talking about getting pregnant—of gender reveals, so we had our OB text my assistant Becca [our baby’s gender], and we bought two party poppers: one blue, one pink. She left out the one with the correct color inside, and Elliot and I popped it together. We both really thought it was a boy, so it was a true shock. My dream in life is to have a daughter [though], and Elliot is really excited for a girl too. I think it’s so typical for boys to want boys, but he has a lot of sisters. It was really sweet. He’s very sensitive.”
