Free Guy was 2021's surprise hit, and there has been talk of a sequel for a while, but star Ryan Reynolds isn't sure.

With Hollywood saturated with sequels, prequels and reboots galore, Reynolds thinks there's nothing wrong with just keeping it a "kick ass" standalone movie.

Free Guy is a gaming movie set in Free City, which sees Guy (Reynolds) unaware that he's an NPC – a Non-Playable Character to any non-gamers out there.

Things change when Guy deals with a bank robber, meets the girl of his dreams – Killing Eve's Jodie Comer – and begins to see his world in a whole new light.

"There is the potential to do a sequel to Free Guy, which would be fun," Reynolds told Variety. "I would love it. But also like, does everything f**king have to be a sequel? I don't know. Sometimes it's OK to just do a movie and have it kick ass and then everyone go home.

"So you know, there's a bit of a push and pull there, resisting the urge to just immediately say, 'Ohh, doing a sequel will validate the first one,'" Reynolds continued.

"No, the first movie validates the first one and then you can leave it at that. So I don't know, we're still talking about it."

The Deadpool star also opened up about his starring role in the critically and commercially panned Green Lantern.

He said the 2011 superhero movie was "tough" to watch at the premiere, but despite the movie's bad bits, the actor had a positive experience shooting it.

"At the same time, there are 185 people that worked on that movie, they all had an amazing time, we loved shooting it. Truly, shooting the movie was a lot of fun. But, you know, sitting in that premiere, watching that, oh my God. It’s tough."

Deadpool and Deadpool 2 are streaming on Disney+, and also available on digital download, DVD and Blu-ray. Deadpool 3, starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, has a release date of September 6, 2024.
