Why Rex Ryan was repping Detroit Lions polo at the Masters on ESPN broadcast

Former NFL coach and current ESPN TV analyst Rex Ryan rocked a gray Detroit Lions polo while he was on ESPN's broadcast for the second day of the Masters golf tournament in Augusta, Georgia.

The longtime former NFL assistant and head coach worked for plenty of different teams, but never had a tenure in Detroit. So why was he rocking the Honolulu Blue along with his Masters hat in Augusta?

Ryan is presumably rocking the Lions gear in support of his son, Seth Ryan, who is an assistant wide receivers coach in Detroit.

Seth joined the Lions in 2021 as a part of the new coaching staff assembled by Dan Campbell, and works with the wideout room and special teams. He previously worked for the Chargers from 2017-20 as an intern and offensive quality control coach following the end of his playing career, where he was a wide receiver at Clemson from 2013-16.

Seth is the latest branch of the Ryan family coaching tree in the NFL. Rex was a longtime defensive coordinator before serving as head coach for the Jets and Bills, while his brother, Rob, who has been a defensive assistant and coordinator in the NFL since 1994. Their father, Buddy Ryan, was an NFL head coach and defensive coordinator, known as the architect of the 1985 Bears defense, along with head coaching stints with the Eagles and Cardinals.

“As a son, you want to be like dad in a way,” Seth said in a 2021 interview. “So you just, you follow footsteps.”

In 2021, Rex said he hopes Seth will become a third-generation head coach in the Ryan family.

"It’s like the family business,” Rex said in 2021. “It really is. And I think so many kids, they go with their father or mother, it’s just a natural thing. And for me and my twin brother, obviously, that was — like from a young age I knew I wanted to coach. And I think, I’m not so sure, but I think Seth was really the same way."
