Why MTCS burst into Nashville area high school baseball rankings

The Tennessean’s Nashville area baseball Large Class and Small Class rankings have been released after the conclusion of Week 7.

The Small Class rankings consist of Class 1A, 2A and Division II-A schools. Large Class schools are Class 3A, 4A and Division II-AA.

Nashville area Large Class baseball rankings

1. Rossview (28-4) — The Hawks defeated No. 2 Clarksville 6-5 to salvage a crucial district series split. Brady Cooper and Ashton Kemp combined for four RBIs. The Hawks’ 23-game win streak ended, but they won three of four games on the week. Last week: No. 1. 

2. Clarksville (28-5) — There wasn’t much harm in splitting the Rossview series. Vanderbilt commitment Korbin Reynolds went 2-for-2 with three RBIs in the Wildcats’ 7-2 win over the Hawks. Last week: No. 2.

3. Riverdale (27-7) — Riverdale went 4-0 and swept a three-game district series over Rockvale and a non-district win over Summit. Braden Leverette was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI against Summit. Last week: No. 3. 

4. CPA (19-8) —  Brock Beddingfield went 3-for-3 with a home run, a double and four RBIs in a 10-4 win over Lipscomb Academy that helped clinch the series. The Lions went 4-0 on the week.  Last week: No. 5.

5. Nolensville (20-6) — The Knights won a district series against Summit and lost 5-1 against Farragut (24-5). Dawson Sweeney struck out 13 and allowed three hits in a 4-0 win over Summit as Nolensville rebounded from its loss in the series. Last week: No. 4. 

6. Independence (17-6) — Auburn signee Saxon Roberts had two RBIs in a 5-3 win over Franklin that helped clinch the series. The Eagles capped the week with an 8-7 win over Siegel. Last week: No. 6.

7. Green Hill (19-5) — The Hawks went 2-2 during a week of tough non-district games, defeating Smith County 10-0 and McCallie 8-2. Nick Owens went 2-for-4 with a double and five RBIs against Smith County. Last week: No. 8.

8. Lipscomb Academy (17-11) — The Mustangs bounced back from the CPA series with wins over FRA and Centennial. Tennessee commitment Jack Dugan went 2-for-3 with a home run, a double and two RBIs against FRA. Last week: No. 7.

9. Stewarts Creek (16-9) — Tyler Huskey was 2-for-3 with two doubles and an RBI in a 5-0 win that helped clinch a district series against Wilson Central. Stewarts Creek went 2-1. Last week: No. 10.

10. Siegel (21-10) — The Stars defeated previous No. 9 Beech 6-4 and went 2-2 on the week. Trey Baker was 2-for-4 with a triple and two RBIs against Beech. Last week: Unranked.

Nashville area Small Class baseball rankings

1. Davidson Academy (20-5) — The Bears won four games by a combined score of 49-3. Peyton Vaughn went 3-for-4 with two doubles and four RBIs in a 12-1 win over Jo Byrns. Last week: No. 2.

2. Friendship Christian (21-10-1) — The Commanders defeated previous No. 1 Goodpasture 6-4. Elijah Stockton went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs. The Commanders ended the week with three losses. Last week: No. 3.

3. Goodpasture (22-7-1) — The Cougars went 2-2, losing to No. 3 Friendship Christian 6-4 and MTCS 6-3. Luke Vierkant allowed three hits and struck out 11 in a 5-0 bounce-back win over DCA. Last week: No. 1.

4. Loretto (15-6) — Carter Daniel struck out 12 in six innings of a 4-2 win over Summertown to salvage a district series split. The Mustangs went 2-2. Last week: No. 4. 

5. Columbia Academy (22-3) — CJ Durrough and Andy Reed combined for three doubles and three RBIs in a 12-2 win over USN that started a 3-0 week of district victories. Last week: No. 5.

6. Eagleville (18-5) — Brayden Baker went 2-for-3 with two doubles and two RBIs in a 9-2 win over Huntland, while also striking out 13 in seven innings. The Eagles went 3-1 with the lone loss to Division II-AA CPA. Last week: No. 6. 

7. Middle Tennessee Christian (17-10) — Nate Fogle allowed two hits and one earned run over five innings, striking out six in a 6-3 win over previous No. 1 Goodpasture. The Cougars went 4-0 to extend their win streak to eight games. Last week: Unranked 

8. Clarksville Academy (16-8) — Tristen Cobbler went 2-for-2 with three RBIs in a 4-3 district win over No. 3 Friendship Christian. The Cougars went 3-1. Last week: No. 9. 

9. White House Heritage (16-5) — Kaleb Fyke struck out nine and Eli Gregory notched four RBIs in a 12-2 win over Trousdale County to clinch the district series. The Patriots extended their win streak to 13 games. Last week: No. 8. 

10. Watertown (14-4) — Watertown went 3-1 with a loss to Forrest. Zeb Major had a double, two RBIs and threw a two-hitter with nine strikeouts in a 10-0 win over Jackson County to start the week. Last week: No. 7.
