Why Mama June Hasn't Seen One of Late Daughter Anna Cardwell's Kids Since Her Funeral

Mama June Shannon is shedding new light on life after the death of her daughter, Anna "Chickadee" Cardwell, who passed away at the age of 29 following a tough battle with cancer.

According to the reality TV star, she hasn't seen 8-year-old granddaughter Kylee since the family gathered to lay their beloved Anna to rest late last winter. Since her daughter's passing, Mama June has been granted custody of Anna's older daughter, Kaitlyn, who is 11.

Fast forward to this week, the 44-year-old revealed to ET that she hasn't seen Kylee since she started living with her dad, Anna's ex-husband Michael Cardwell, in a piece published on Tuesday, April 9.

"This is the truth, Kylee's dad shouldn't be raising Kylee and I shouldn't be raising Kaitlyn," Mama June told the outlet. "[Their] mother, Anna, should be raising them and that's what I say over and over and over again. I even tell Kaitlyn that very often, 'I'll never replace your mother.'"

Despite the tragic loss of their mother, which Mama June likened to having their "world tossed upside down," the TV personality explained that at least one of the girls seems to be coping well and is doing just fine in her care.

"I can't answer for Kylee because we have not seen her since the funeral, but Kaitlyn is doing amazing," she said. "She's going to public school. She's doing more amazing than she was in her private school as far as grades and stuff."

"I'm sure Kaitlyn does have her good days and she has her bad days -- just like me," she added. "I have my good days, my bad days."

Mama June also expects more hard days in the near future, as she told the publication that the upcoming episodes of Mama June: Family Crisis, which mark the end of her late daughter's features on the reality series, will be "traumatic to watch."

"For me personally, it's just been emotional," she said, explaining that Anna's final appearances are set to be released sometime this summer. Those episodes focus on the last "month or so of Anna as she gets worse and worse."

"That's going to be traumatic for a bunch of us to watch," she concluded.

Before Anna's passing, the family matriarch had spent months updating fans on her condition, sharing candid and oftentimes emotional messages on social media. That all came to a devastating end in December 2023 when the 29-year-old mother lost her battle with stage 4 adrenal cancer.

New episodes of Mama June: Family Crisis air on Fridays at 9 p.m. ET via WeTV.
