Why Chris Pine Thinks Kids Should Play Dungeons & Dragons at School
Well, folks, Chris Pine has an idea—one that we think is very much worth considering. And not just because he's Chris Pine. The actor, and Esquire cover star, believes that children should play Dungeons & Dragons at school to further their social enrichment. Pine, the star of Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, was recently introduced to the fantasy board game. Now, he might just be its biggest fan. In an interview with Slash Film, the actor explained that he sat down for a round with his sister and parents, and quickly learned that Dungeons & Dragons is a great way to build character, practice teamwork, and have a good laugh.
“Within 15 minutes, we were having the time of our lives, and we didn’t have to know anything,” Pine said. Though Dungeons & Dragons is iconic in the board-game world, it has developed a nerdy reputation from those who’ve never tried it out. The game requires players to roleplay and take down a cast of mystical monsters in order to win. For some, it’s certifiably uncool, but Pine thinks we should cast those judgments aside and get to slaying dragons for the greater good.
“I think is so important to know, why I think it should be played in schools is that it immediately teaches cooperation,” he explained. “It exercises the imagination. It’s joyous, it’s improvisational. And within a matter of minutes, everybody’s on the same page. You’re not arguing about whether or not you’re cool or not. You’re arguing about whether or not you should have gone over the boulder to kill the dragon. I think it’s about the coolest thing I’ve encountered in a long time”
A game that teaches cooperation and dissolves social hierarchies? Sign me up! Unfortunately, getting Dungeons and Dragons on a syllabus might be a difficult task. Pine plays Edgin Darvis in the movie, which follows a wild quest to find a missing artifact in the Forgotten Realms.
