Whoopi Goldberg Enrages Internet With Thoughts on Younger Generations' Work Ethic

Whoopi Goldberg ruffled some younger folks' feathers on The View this week, after going on a rant about millennials' work ethic.

The heated conversation went down on the Wednesday, Nov. 8 episode of the daytime talk show, when Goldberg, 67, compared younger generations who "only want to work four hours," to people like her, who she said "busted our behind" to get to where they are today.

It started when her co-host Alyssa Farah Griffin, 34, talked about the millennial generation being "the generation of the housing crisis, financial crisis and 9/11," with many people struggling to buy homes or even choosing not to have children for financial reasons.

"We've been in war my entire generation," Griffin continued, adding, "49 percent of people are living with their parents. Our American dream is different."

But Goldberg, a baby boomer, claimed that "every generation comes and wants to do better than their parents did," before stating, "I'm sorry, if you only want to work four hours, it's going to be harder for you to get a house."

"I feel for everybody that feels this, but, I'm sorry, we busted our behinds," the Sister Act star added. "We had to bust our behinds, because we didn't have the option of going back. We had all kinds of stuff."

While Griffin partially agreed with Goldberg, she still offered a counterargument stating, "Millennials are statistically the first generation that's likely to [be] worse off than their parents."

But Goldberg wasn't having it, as she clapped back, "That's what they said to us as well. Every generation is told you're going to do worse than your parents."

"And you know what?" she added. "People pick it up, and they do what they do and they raise themselves. And this is what you've got to do. It's called being a good citizen."

But after Wednesday's episode aired, it became clear that not everyone agreed with Goldberg's point of view, with many people taking to Twitter to address her "insensitive" take.

"Whoopi is a baby boomer. She doesn't understand anything," one user wrote on X (formerly Twitter) in response to Goldberg's tangent.

"Whoopi is at the age where she has became out of touch with reality," someone else added. Sayin we only wanna work 4 hours is hyperbole at its worst! Sorry if we wanna enjoy life and actually have a good work life balance."

Others said Goldberg's comments were coming from a place of "privilege," as the EGOT winner herself is estimated to have a fortune worth a cool $60 million.

"Alyssa laid out facts and Whoopi came with feelings.. don’t insinuate a group of people are lazy when you haven’t even done your research ma’am," another post read.

"Can someone tell Whoopi that millennials are the ones holding 2-3 jobs at the same time to be able to afford life?" wrote someone else.

"Whoopi, girl hush!" another user lamented. "Not one millinial [sic] or Gen Z person said they only want to work 4 hours. Now what we DO ask for is having a 4 day work week, work from home (which is coming anyway) and for you OLD PEOPLE in power to pass the torch so we young people can actually afford life."

"This is what it sounds like when one has been a millionaire for several decades," someone else wrote.
