White Sox manager Tony La Russa misses game vs. Royals with medical issue

Chicago White Sox manager Tony La Russa missed Tuesday night's game against the Kansas City Royals “at the direction of his doctors,” the team announced.

Specifics about La Russa’s condition are not yet known, and it’s unclear what medical issue he is dealing with. La Russa, 77, is set to undergo further testing Wednesday.

The announcement came less than an hour before the game, which will kick off a three-game series at Guaranteed Rate Field. Bench coach Miguel Cairo took over for La Russa.

La Russa met with reporters an hour before the game and seemed to be going through his pre-game routine just before the White Sox announced he wouldn't be with the team for the game. The White Sox said they will provide an update on his health before Wednesday night's game.

La Russa is in his second season back with the White Sox. They have lost nine of their past 11 games, and sat in third in the AL Central entering Tuesday.
