White House vows aid to Haiti after ‘horrific’ assassination of President Jovenel Moise

The White House vowed to stand by the people of Haiti after President Jovenel Moise was assassinated early Wednesday in a shocking attack on his official residence.

Press Secretary Jen Psaki called the overnight killing a “horrific crime” and said the Biden administration was seeking to collect more details about the brazen attack in the capital Port-au-Prince.

“We’re so sorry for the loss that they are all suffering,” Psaki told CNN. “We stand ready and stand by them to provide any assistance that needed.”

Psaki did not reveal any new information about the brazen attack in the capital Port-au-Prince, which was reportedly carried out by a well-organized group of armed men.

“We’re still gathering details, we’re still gathering specifics,” he said. “And of course, our embassy and State Department will be in close touch.”

The attack, which left First Lady Martine Moise wounded, could spark a new round of instability in troubled Haiti, the poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere. A government account claimed the attackers spoke Spanish, a potentially explosive detail since Haiti shares the island of Hispaniola with the Dominican Republic.

“It’s a tragedy,” Psaki said. “We stand with them, and it’s important the people of Haiti know that.”
