Can you believe it's been 25 years since audiences everywhere fell in love with Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan's online meet-cute in You've Got Mail? The hit 1998 rom-com about rival bookstore owners brought in more than $250 million at the box office and spawned countless pop-culture references. It also introduced us to two incredibly talented (and unbelievably adorable) child actors: Jeffrey Scaperrotta, who played Matt, Joe Fox's precocious half-brother, and Hallee Hirsh, who portrayed his spirited young aunt Annabelle.

Two-and-a-half decades on, let's catch up with the kids from our favorite late '90s rom-com, and find out where are they now.

Hallee Hirsh

Hirsh continued acting as well with credits on shows like JAG, ER and Flight 29 Down. However, she's since stepped back from performing and is now the proud owner of a popular doughnut shop in North Carolina called Hole Doughnuts. She's also a married mother of two.

Are the kids from You've Got Mail still acting?

Scaperrotta has enjoyed a recurring role as Detective Elliot Stabler's son on Law & Order: SVU and Law & Order: Organized Crime.

Hirsh has also continued acting, landing parts in several indie films and shows like JAG, ER and Flight 29 Down. But in 2016, she made headlines for becoming the owner of a super popular doughnut shop in Asheville, North Carolina called Hole Doughnuts.

"We just kind of decided to change everything," Hirsh said of why she and her husband chose to leave Los Angeles and start a doughnut spot. "We went off searching for somewhere in America full of the culture we love, that included homesteading and food—and Asheville called our name so loudly."

She said she made the move in part out of her frustration with acting. "I felt like I didn't have a lot of control over my own success," she said.

However, Hirsh doesn’t consider her new job to be fully out of the spotlight. "There's a huge performance itch that is scratched at Hole doughnuts," she shared. "We are very much on stage, making doughnuts right before people's eyes."

What have the kids in You've Got Mail said about the movie?

The pair reunited on the Today show in 2018 for the film's 20th anniversary and shared memories from the making of the movie.

“I was obsessed with Meg Ryan,” Hirsh said. “I wanted to be Meg Ryan when I grew up. And Tom Hanks was pretty well on my radar as well. So it was definitely, at that point in my life, the biggest win. I remember being at home and getting a phone call from my agent, and screaming and running around the house. And I think my mother was probably in tears.”

“I have really lovely memories working with Tom Hanks,” the actress continued. “Tom Hanks is, like, a people person. He is like the type of person who knew everybody on set's name.”

Scaperrotta remembers filming the scene in which Joe (Hanks) takes the kids to a local carnival. “I didn't know I was actually filming just because of how friendly he was with me,” he said. “Like, I was on his shoulders for basically the whole entire time. Even after shooting, I was, like, still hanging on his shoulders, eating cotton candy, playing with the carnival games.”

Hirsh also shared that one of her favorite scenes was cut from the movie. “The final director's cut of the film was three hours long,” she revealed. “Can you imagine a three-hour You've Got Mail? That would be nuts. Anyway, the scene was shot in this incredible Vietnamese restaurant which doesn't exist anymore. And I just remember this bowl of pho that we had to eat all day long during that scene. I'm sobbing at Tom Hanks because he put Meg Ryan's store out of business. And I remember having to cry all day long.”

Also, some will be shocked to learn that Hirsch is actually an amazing singer and the version of “Tomorrow” from Annie that she performs in the movie was intentionally bad. “That year, I was almost Cosette on Broadway,” she shared. “Didn't quite happen for me, but then I got You've Got Mail, which was amazing. So I had been training, like, since I was 5 years old, for five years. And all day long during this Christmas scene I had been belting out 'Tomorrow.' For my last take, during my close-up, Nora Ephron said, ‘Just for fun, do this one, like, off-key and out of rhythm. Like, sing it like someone who doesn't know how to sing.’ I was like, 'Oh, my gosh, that'd be so fun.' So I did it. And that was the one they used. And I remember being at the premiere and people going, ‘Oh, Hallee, you're such a good singer.’ And I was just like, 'Thank you.' ...”
