Where and When to Stream ‘The Idea of You’

Anne Hathaway is back and seated exactly where we want her – at the helm of a rom-com. Your favorite actress stars in the new film, The Idea of You, alongside one of young Hollywood’s busiest actors, Nicholas Galitzine. You may recognize him from Bottoms, Red, White & Royal Blue, or Mary & George, which he stars in alongside Julianne Moore.
The Idea of You comes from the novel of the same name, written by Robinne Lee. The movie follows a single mother who has a meet-cute with the lead singer of a boy band named Hayes Campbell while accompanying her daughter to Coachella. While the inspiration for the Hayes character in the book is still up for debate, the movie paints him as a not-so-subtle Harry Styles-type heartthrob. Hathaway plays a freshly 40-year-old art dealer, to Galitzine’s 24-year-old super star. It’s a total fever dream, and it’s finally available to stream.
This new film, long-anticipated among romance lovers, gives us more than sex and steam–it gives us a soundtrack. Galitzine’s Hayes Campbell leads an uber-popular band called August Moon, which stamped its name on some very real original songs, available to stream on Spotify and Apple Music. Among readers and speculators at large, August Moon is a not-so-thinly veiled recreation of One Direction. The fictional (yet streamable) boy band also features Jaiden Anthony, Raymond Cham, Vik White, and Dakota Adan.
The film comes from Michael Showalter, the name behind such hits as Wet Hot American Summer, Search Party, and The Big Sick. Showalter directed and co-wrote the screenplay alongside Jennifer Westfeldt, who also penned and directed the 2012 indie hit Friends with Kids. These are strong names to have on the rom-com front, a genre which is undergoing a resurgence with recent hits like Anyone But You and The Fall Guy.
One thing is certain, streamers are ready to get romantic again. This Coachella, boy band, age-gap sex fantasy seems like a good place to start.
Where is The Idea of You streaming?
The Idea of You begins streaming on Amazon Prime Video on May 2 at 3:00 a.m. ET. The film originally premiered in March 2024 at South by Southwest, now in the hands of Amazon MGM Studios.
