In the golden age of reality shows, we've seen a number of memorable moments occur. We've witnessed musicians become household names on American Idol and daring individuals persevere in the jungle on Survivor. But one thing we've never seen before is a competition that reaches for the stars ... literally. Fox's latest reality series will defy what we think of this concept, as celebrities head out into previously uncharted territory.

In Stars on Mars, actor William Shatner will host a dozen celebrities as they endure living conditions akin to the planet Mars. The famous participants (which include Modern Family actress Ariel Winter and Vanderpump Rules personality Tom Schwartz) will compete in a number of tasks until one "celebronaut" wins the the season. Sounds intriguing, right? We think so too. But the show already has us scratching our heads about one pivotal element.

Because it's highly likely Fox didn't take celebrities to Mars for the show, it led us to wonder how they were able to simulate it on Earth. More importantly, we want to know where the show was filmed in lieu of traveling to space. Luckily, we got some answers and they may surprise you.

Where is Stars on Mars filmed?

We hate to disappoint, but Stars on Mars was not filmed on Mars. Instead, the reality competition show went down under for production, choosing the Australian Outback for a realistic take on what the planet may look like.

According to Decider, Stars on Mars took their competitors to a town in South Australia called Coober Pedy. The publication wrote that the area's famous desert looks similar to what astronauts know of Mars' red landscape, making it the perfect backdrop for a previously uncharted reality show. What's more, Far Out Magazine notes that Coober Pedy was also the location for the 1985 film Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome.

While Coober Pedy's aesthetics will definitely be a draw for viewers, the town is more than just an area used for filming. According to its official website, Coober Pedy calls itself the "opal capital of the world" with mining being a popular occupation among its residents. The area is also well-known for its "dugouts," which houses about 50% of the population in underground homes to weather the extreme summer heat and winter cold of the Australian Outback.

Between Coober Pedy's natural beauty and the behaviors of day-to-day life, it makes perfect sense for Fox to send its novel reality series there. As the weeks go on, we can't wait to see what the show — and the town hosting it — has in store.
